    Abstract: A hot melt adhesive composed of a styrene-butadiene-styrene polymer having a relatively high diblock content and styrene content, a second styrenic block copolymer having a lower diblock content than the styrene-butadiene-styrene polymer, which is preferably a styrene-isoprene-styrene polymer, together with tackifying resin, and liquid plasticizer. The preferred styrene-butadiene-styrene polymer contains a styrene content of greater than 30 percent and a diblock content greater than 30 percent by weight. When used in conjunction with a styrene-isoprene-styrene polymer, the hot melt composition provides improved peel strength at 5° C., and when used as a pad attachment positioning adhesive, did not exhibit adhesive transfer at 40° C.

    Abstract: A system for testing an adhesive used for an adhesive-backed hygiene article, such as a feminine care pad, a breast pad, or certain adult incontinence pads, comprises first and second substrates defining a gap for positioning a weight which, by using a force measurement system, is caused to move over the substrate and to detach the adhesive-backed hygiene article from the cloth material. A method utilizes the system and measures the force as the weight moves after the weight contacts the adhesive-backed hygiene article. The force measured is reflective of the entire system, both the force required to cause the adhesive between the article and the cloth material to fail and for the article to bunch on itself. Depending on the specific test, one or two weights may be used.

    Abstract: Build-up of adhesive on process equipment is reduced or even eliminated by increasing the running temperature of process equipment used to guide substrates as they are conveyed along a system used to apply adhesive and form laminates. Preferably, the process equipment is heated to a temperature of at least about 5° C., preferably at least about 10° C., and most preferably at least about 15° C., above the crossover temperature of the adhesive, and at most about 60° C., preferably at most about 50° C., and most preferably at most about 45° C., above the crossover temperature. This method is particularly beneficial when using hot melt adhesives to form laminates with permeable substrates, such as low basis weight nonwovens, for use in disposable absorbent articles. A system for applying a hot melt adhesive to a substrate comprises a heater for providing heat to the process equipment and, optionally, a chiller for cooling the process equipment.

    Abstract: A moisture-curable adhesive composition comprises a polymer component selected from a silane-terminated polyalkylene oxide and/or a polyurethane; a plurality of amino-silane modified wollastonite fibers having an average aspect ratio of from about 1.5:1 to about 12:1 and an average fiber length of from about 6 μm to about 825 μm; at least two fillers, wherein one of said fillers is untreated and a second of said fillers is treated with a modifier selected from the group consisting of a fatty acid derivative, a silane, a titanate, and mixtures thereof wherein at least one of said fillers is irregularly shaped; and a rheology modifier. The composition preferably further comprises a plurality of irregularly-shaped crumb rubber particles having an average particle size of between about 0.5 to 1.5 mm. The composition is useful for adhering tiles to surfaces, especially large format tiles to substantially vertically-extending wall surfaces.

    Abstract: A semicrystalline copolyester resin composition formed by twin screw extrusion of various ingredients includes copolyester resins, antiblock, slip and antifog additives. This semicrystalline copolyester resin can be extruded on to PET film or coextruded with PET resin to form clear PET films with antifog properties. These films with antifog properties are produced in a single step without the use of solvent and does not involve any secondary step for coating a separate antifog layer. This minimizes the cost and time required by a converter to make such clear antifog films. These films containing the heat seal copolyester resin can be heat sealed to clear APET trays. Contents within the trays, such as food, can be seen without fogging on the inside of the film that is used to seal the tray. The seals are strong and the peels are smooth giving a very good packaging performance.
