    Abstract: A method for allowing or denying, by an appliance, access to a resource by an application on a client via a virtual private network connection includes basing the decision to allow or deny access on identification of the application. The appliance intercepts a request from an application on a client on a first network to access via a virtual private network connection a resource on a second network. The appliance identifies the application and associates with the intercepted request an authorization policy based on the identity of the application. The appliance determines, using the authorization policy and the identity of the application, to either allow or deny access by the application to the resource.

    Abstract: An electrical protection device is provided. The device can be removably attached to or mounted inside of a power source, such as a vehicle, e.g., automobile, battery and can employ a replaceable fuse element. The device includes an overcurrent protection element, such as a fuse element, and provides any one or more of the following types of electrical protection: (i) overcurrent protection; (ii) accident or catastrophic event power cutout protection; and (iii) load dump protection. The system is configurable to protect certain vehicle electrical components from an overcurrent and allow others to operate independent of the overcurrent protection. Systems and methods employing the protection device are also illustrated and discussed.

    Abstract: A system for controlling flight of an aircraft has sensors (37, 43), a receiver (45), and a digital control system (57), all of which are carried aboard the aircraft. The sensors (37, 43) determine the position of the aircraft relative to the earth and the inertial movement of the aircraft. The receiver (45) receives transmitted data (51, 55) communicating the position and movement of a reference vehicle relative to the earth. The control system (57) calculates the position and velocity of the aircraft relative to the reference vehicle using the data from the sensors (37, 43) and the receiver (45) and then commands flight control devices (33) on the aircraft for maneuvering the aircraft in a manner that maintains a selected position and/or velocity relative to the reference vehicle. The system allows use of a graphical or tactile user interfaces.

    Abstract: A damage resistant mailbox assembly to prevent damage to mailboxes and vehicles, persons or equipment which contact same. The mailbox is supported from an upright support post or structure by one or more expandable and bendable spring units. One end of each spring unit is attached to a plate which is in turn attached to the support post or structure. The other end of each spring unit is attached to the closed end of a standard mailbox enclosure. The device provides for movement of the mailbox when struck by external force, within a 360° radius about an axis substantially parallel to each support spring, with each spring biasing a return to the mailbox structure's original position.

    Abstract: Si—Ge quantum wells where the well material has a lowest conduction band energy minimum at k=0 (the Γ point of the first Brillouin zone) are provided. Quantum well structures that satisfy this condition have “Kane-like” bands at and near k=0 which can provide physical effects useful for various device applications, especially optical modulators. In the Si1-xGex material system, this condition on the band structure is satisfied for x greater than about 0.7. The quantum well barrier composition may or may not have Kane-like bands. A preferred method of providing such quantum well structures on a substrate (e.g., a silicon substrate) is to grow a first Ge-rich Si—Ge buffer layer on the substrate, and then anneal the resulting layered structure. In many cases it is further preferred to grow a second Ge-rich Si—Ge buffer layer on top of the first buffer layer and anneal the resulting layered structure.
