摘要: Semiconductor-on-insulator (SOI) structures, including large area SOI structures, are provided which have one or more regions composed of a layer (15) of a substantially single-crystal semiconductor (e.g., doped silicon) attached to a support substrate (20) composed of an oxide glass or an oxide glass-ceramic. The oxide glass or oxide glass-ceramic is preferably transparent and preferably has a strain point of less than 1000° C., a resistivity at 250° C. that is less than or equal to 1016 Ω-cm, and contains positive ions (e.g., alkali or alkaline-earth ions) which can move within the glass or glass-ceramic in response to an electric field at elevated temperatures (e.g., 300–1000° C.). The bond strength between the semiconductor layer (15) and the support substrate (20) is preferably at least 8 joules/meter2. The semiconductor layer (15) can include a hybrid region (16) in which the semiconductor material has reacted with oxygen ions originating from the glass or glass-ceramic. The support substrate (20) preferably includes a depletion region (23) which has a reduced concentration of the mobile positive ions.

摘要: An electrode for deionization of water is made of a continuous activated carbon structure. The activated carbon is derived from a synthetic carbon precursor. The structure has openings, inlet and outlet ends such that water entering the inlet end passes through the openings and exits through the outlet end, a conductive coating on at least part of the outer surface of the structure, and a metal wire in contact with the structure. A deionization system is made up of the electrodes in series so that the outlet end of one electrode is next to the inlet end of the nearest downstream electrode. The metal wire of each electrode is connected to a power source to deliver the opposite charge as the charge delivered to its neighboring electrodes. Each of the electrodes is fixedly attached to and sealed within a housing with an air and moisture-tight seal. Openings in the housing between the electrodes, allow air to be removed before use. A method of removing ions from a stream of water involves removing air from the system by applying a vacuum to the housing openings and sealing the housing openings, passing a current through the device, and passing a stream of water containing ions through it to remove the ions.

摘要: A method of producing a continuous carbon structure involves providing an inorganic support and a synthetic carbon precursor, contacting the inorganic support with the carbon precursor, curing and carbonizing the carbon precursor. Prior to the carbonizing step, a potassium compound is introduced into the carbon precursor. The potassium compound is greater than about 3% by weight of the total weight of the carbon precursor and potassium compound.The potassium compound is then removed from the carbonized carbon structure. A carbon structure is produced having a surface area of at least about 100 m.sup.2 /g.

摘要: Disclosed is cold-start fuel vapor emission control system for an internal combustion engine having an intake manifold and a fuel tank, comprising the following components: (1) a housing for containing an honeycomb adsorber for adsorbing fuel vapor; (2) a vapor passage for fluidly connecting the housing and the fuel tank; (3) a charging system for measuring the quantity of adsorbed fuel vapor and for, if necessary, increasing the amount of adsorbed fuel vapor to a level sufficient to "vapor-only" start the engine; (4) a purging passage connecting the housing to an intake manifold for introducing a mixture comprised of the fuel vapor and air to the intake manifold. In a preferred embodiment, the honeycomb adsorber comprises a monolithic, binderless honeycomb structure having a continuous activated carbon phase.

摘要: A device for purifying a workstream of contaminants and method of making. One device is made of an inorganic monolithic porous particulate filter and a continuous uninterrupted coating of activated carbon impregnated into the pores of the filter. Preferably the filter has inlet and outlet faces, and a multiplicity of cells separated by porous walls and extending longitudinally and mutually parallel therethrough from inlet to outlet end, a portion of the total number of cells being plugged at the inlet end face, and the remaining portion of the total number of cells being plugged at the outlet end face of the device. Another device can be made entirely of activated carbon having the multicellular structure. A workstream containing contaminants is passed through the device to cause retention of the contaminants. The device can have electrically conducting mechanism for conducting electric current therethrough for removal of the contaminants and regeneration of the device.

摘要: A composite including an inorganic substrate having an outer surface from which pores extend into the substrate and a coating extending over the substrate's outer surface as a substantially uninterrupted layer of carbon. The coating penetrates into the pores of the inorganic substrate. The composite can be made by a process including the steps of contacting an inorganic substrate with a coating and impregnating liquid consisting essentially or wholly of a carbon precursor liquid, treating the inorganic substrate under conditions effective to cure substantially the carbon precursor liquid, and heating the inorganic substrate under conditions effective to convert substantially the cured carbon precursor liquid to carbon.

摘要: Oxide-coated whiskers suitable for consolidation into or incorporation within a whisker-reinforced composite ceramic article are provided by dispersing inorganic whiskers in a colloidal oxide sol, separating the dispersion into fine droplets, and drying the droplets to provide a solid particulate product comprising the coated whiskers. The continuous oxide coating on the whiskers provides protection and aids in composite consolidation.
