A golf club head is provided having a substantially increased sweet spot across its club face. A preferred construction includes an annular area on a rear surface having increased thickness surrounding a central region with a balance point of the club face. The central region of the face has a generally reduced thickness that is less than the maximum of the annular area but greater than a minimum thickness at the peripheral area. The face material may be metallic, but in alternative embodiments the effective bending stiffness profiles represented by this annular area may be achieved by appropriate use of composites, for example. Methods for manufacturing a golf club head having a face with the bending stiffness profiles of the present invention include forging and machining techniques as well as laser deposition and inertia welding.

An upper portion of the body of each head has a reduced stiffness, while a lower portion of the body is configured with recesses that provide reduced stiffness toward the heel and the toe. A low central region supports the head at impact with the golf ball. The relative stiffness in the lower portion of the club head, varying from heel to toe, is designed in conjunction with a top to bottom difference in stiffness. Thus, the golf club head has enhanced flexibility and selectively increased stiffness, for improved performance and feel.

Screen (10) for a user interface of a television schedule system and process consists of an array (24) of irregular cells (26), which vary in length, corresponding to different television program lengths of one half hour to one-and-one half hours or more. The array is arranged as three columns (28) of one-half hour in duration, and twelve rows (30) of program listings. Some of the program listings overlap two or more of the columns (28) because of their length. Because of the widely varying length of the cells (26), if a conventional cursor used to select a cell location were to simply step from one cell to another, the result would be abrupt changes in the screen (10) as the cursor moved from a cell (26) of several hours length to an adjacent cell in the same row. An effective way of taming the motion is to assume that behind every array (24) is an underlying array of regular cells. The forging having an alloy composition selected from one of a nickel base alloy, a cobalt-chromium-nickel base alloy, a nickel-cobalt base alloy and an iron-nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy and having a grain size of ASTM grain size 4 or finer, as measured by ASTM method E112 and having a tensile strength in the range of 135 to 175 KSI. The process includes: (1) four upset forgings, (2) a rapid cooling after the final upset cooling, (3) a first and second upset forging with a reduction greater than 50%, (4) a third upset forging with a reduction greater than 25.%, and (5) a forging process with a fourth upset forging with a reduction greater than 50%.
