An implantable medical device receives a physiological signal indicative of circulatory blood volume and detects hypovolemia from that physiological signal. In one embodiment, an implantable pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) senses a PAP signal, and the implantable medical device detects hypovolemia from the PAP signal.

Various system embodiments comprise a stimulator adapted to deliver a stimulation signal for a heart failure therapy, a number of sensors adapted to provide at least a first measurement of a heart failure status and a second measurement of the heart failure status, and a controller. The controller is connected to the stimulator and to the number of sensors. The controller is adapted to use the first and second measurements to create a heart failure status index, and control the stimulator to modulate the signal using the index. Other aspects and embodiments are provided herein.

Embodiments of the present invention are directed to implantable systems, and methods for use therewith, that monitor and modify a patient's arterial blood pressure without requiring an intravascular pressure transducer. In accordance with an embodiment, for each of a plurality of periods of time, there is a determination one or more metrics indicative of pulse arrival time (PAT), each of which are indicative of how long it takes for the left ventricle to generate a pressure pulsation that travels from the patient's aorta to a location remote from the patient's aorta. Based on the one or more metrics indicative of PAT, the patient's arterial blood pressure is estimated. Changes in the arterial blood pressure are monitored over time. Additionally, the patient's arterial blood pressure can be modified by initiating and/or adjusting pacing and/or other therapy based on the estimates of the patient's arterial blood pressure and/or monitored changes therein.

Systems, devices and methods of monitoring blood flow velocity are disclosed herein. For example, one method of monitoring blood flow velocity includes: locating a blood flow velocity sensor near the ostium in the coronary sinus; and sensing towards a portion of the aorta. A second example method includes: locating a blood flow velocity sensor in a vein; and sensing towards an adjacent artery. A third example method includes: locating a blood flow velocity sensor near the tricuspid valve; and sensing towards a tricuspid valve annulus. A fourth example method includes: locating a blood flow velocity sensor right ventricular outflow tract; and sensing towards a portion of the aorta. A fifth example method includes: locating a blood flow velocity sensor in the great cardiac vein; and sensing towards a left anterior descending artery. A sixth example method includes: locating a blood flow velocity sensor in the right atrial appendage; and sensing towards a portion of the aorta.

Continuous remote monitoring of patients based on data obtained from an implantable hemodynamic monitor provides an interactive patient management system. Using network systems, patients are remotely monitored to continuously diagnose and treat heart-failure conditions. A screen displayable summary provides continuous feedback and information to physicians, patients and authorized third parties. The quick look summary includes various sites and presentation tailored to match the patients' and physicians' needs. The quick look summary further includes intelligent features that understand and retain the user's interests, preferences and use patterns. Patients, physicians and other caregivers are seamlessly connected to monitor and serve the chronic needs of heart-failure patients in a reliable and economic manner.

The present invention relates to an eavesdropping device for monitoring measured physiological variables of an individual, which eavesdropping device comprises a receiver and a communication interface. The eavesdropping device of the present invention is typically applied in a system comprising a first sensor arranged to be disposed in or outside the body of the individual for measuring aortic blood pressure Pa, and a second sensor arranged for measuring distal blood pressure Pd. Further, the system comprises a central monitoring device for monitoring the measured physiological variables and a communication link between the sensors and the central monitoring device for communicating signals representing the measured physiological variables from the sensors to the central monitoring device. The eavesdropping device is configured such that the communication interface is arranged at the communication link to communicate at least the signal representing the aortic blood pressure to a monitor of the eavesdropping device. Moreover, the receiver of the eavesdropping device is connected to the communication link, in parallel with the central monitoring device. The signal representing the aortic blood pressure Pa is communicated to the receiver via a high-impedance connection at the communication interface, and the receiver of the eavesdropping device is further arranged to receive the signal representing the measured distal blood pressure Pd from the communication link. By means of the blood pressure signals of the respective sensor, FFR can be calculated.

A method for modulating one or more functions of an implanted medical device is disclosed. The method includes measuring a cardiovascular pressure of a patient; evaluating the cardiovascular pressure based on one or more characteristics of a cardiac cycle of the patient at the time the pressure was measured; and modulating one or more functions of the device based on the pressure. Also disclosed is a method for assessing a cardiovascular pressure of a patient with an implanted medical device that includes detecting one or more characteristics of a cardiac cycle of the patient's heart; detecting the cardiovascular pressure of the patient; classifying the cardiovascular pressure based on one or more characteristics of the cardiac cycle of the patient's heart; and displaying the cardiovascular pressure along with the classification. Also disclosed is a system for collection and display of a cardiovascular pressure of a patient.

A system for heart performance characterization and abnormality detection includes an interface for receiving digitized electrical signals representing blood pressure waveforms over one or more heart beat cycles. The digitized electrical signals comprise, a first digital data sequence representing normal blood pressure of a patient, a second digital data sequence representing random blood pressure of a normal patient and a third digital data sequence representing a potentially abnormal blood pressure of a patient. A complexity processor calculates first, second and third complexity indices for the corresponding first, second and third digital data sequences respectively. A correlation processor uses the calculated first, second and third complexity indices to calculate one or more measures indicating deviation of the potentially abnormal blood pressure of the patient from a normal value.
