Non-ferrous metals are recovered from metal bearing ores or other metal sources in substantially quantitative yields by treating a finely divided metal bearing material with an aqueous inorganic acid to form a slurry and baking the slurry at atmospheric pressure and at a temperature of about 350.degree. to 800.degree.C. or higher under quiescent conditions for a period of time sufficient to convert the non-ferrous metals into soluble salts. The fumes from the baking process are scrubbed with a dilute acid solution to extract volatile metal salts. The residue is leached with an appropriate solution or solutions to recover the soluble metal salts which are then recovered from the solution by conventional techniques.

A process for the production of metallic metals selected from the group consisting of copper, silver and mercury, which comprises contacting an aqueous solution of the metal compound with a solution of a reduced quinonic compound, preferably an anthraquinone compound, in an organic solvent which is substantially insoluble in and immiscible with water, resulting in the precipitation of the metallic compound which is recovered. The organic phase may be separated, the quinonic compound may be reduced and used again for treating subsequent batches of metal salts.

Processes for and compositions utilized in the recovery of noble metals from noble metal containing substances by subjecting such substances- preferably in comminuted form- to the action of a solvent preferably comprising diacetone alcohol as a major component, water, minor amounts of glacial acetic acid potassium iodide and elemental iodine. Solvation of the noble metal occurs during agitation and heating of the slurry. The noble metal contents are removed from the noble metal pregnant solution by displacement onto a non-noble metal surface. The solid noble metal containing residue is treated with sufficient aqueous hydroxide solution to convert excess non-noble metal into its water-soluble salt. The remaining insoluble material containing the noble metal recovered is rinsed to remove any remaining unreacted alkali and the soluble salts and is then digested with concentrated sulfuric acid to dissolve any remaining acid soluble impurities, the remaining acid insoluble residue is rinsed, dried and comprises substantially pure noble metal.
