Abstract:
A coating composition for a food or beverage can that includes an emulsion polymerized latex polymer formed by combining an ethylenically unsaturated monomer component with an aqueous dispersion of a salt of an acid- or anhydride-functional polymer and an amine, preferably, a tertiary amine.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method for preparing a slip-resistant surface on an engineered wood product. The method includes the steps of (i) providing an engineered wood product (panel), (ii) applying a slip-resistant surface coating system, which includes a liquid radiation-curable coating composition and a texturing agent, to at least a portion of at least one surface of the wood product (panel); and (iii) curing the composition. In a preferred embodiment the coating composition is substantially free of solvent and radiation-curable. The coating composition may be applied in one or more layers, and the coating composition is in the form of a UV-curable coating composition.
Abstract:
A polyurethane dispersion is prepared by reacting a hydroxy-functional sulfonated unsaturated alkyd with an isocyanate in the presence of one or more vinyl monomers to form a blend containing the vinyl monomers and a sulfonated polyurethane polymer containing ethylenic groups. The blend is dispersed in water and the vinyl monomers are reacted by free radical polymerization.
Abstract:
The present invention refers to a method of making an copper-free article having a metal coating deposited on a substrate comprising: providing a substrate; contacting a surface of said substrate with a solution comprising: at least one metal ion selected from the group consisting of Ce, Pr, Nd, Eu, Er, Ga, W, Al, Mn, Mo, Sb, Te, La, Sm or their mixtures; and applying a metal coating on said surface of said substrate. In another embodiment the present invention refers to a method of making a metal coated article: providing a substrate; contacting a surface of said substrate with a solution comprising a mixture of more than one metal ion selected from the same group as listed above; or contacting said surface of said substrate with more than one solution comprising in each solution at least one metal ion selected from the same group; and applying a metal coating on said surface of said substrate. Moreover, the present invention refers to a method of making a metal coated article comprising: providing a substrate; contacting a surface of said substrate with a solution comprising a Bi metal ion, and applying a metal coating on said activated surface of said substrate. Furthermore an article obtainable by any of said methods, is claimed.
Abstract:
A coated veneered article has at least one visible wood veneer layer coated with a multilayer finishing system comprising a coating layer nearest the veneer layer comprising a cationically polymerized moiety or moiety polymerized via cationic and free radical cure mechanisms, and an outermost coating layer comprising a free radically polymerized moiety. The article exhibits less veneer checking than a veneered article coated only with free radically polymerized coating layers.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a novel stack of siding, comprising: first and second coated siding pieces comprising an outer topcoat layer, an inner decorative coating layer and a fiberboard cement substrate layer; and a liner positioned between the first and second coated siding pieces. The siding, during normal transportation and installation, retains an acceptable appearance that is substantially free of viewable scratches or mars. In more preferred embodiments, the outer topcoat layer of the siding has a thickness of at least 8 microns and comprises a polyurethane dispersion. The present invention also provides novel methods of pre-finishing a fiberboard cement siding product, comprising the steps of: providing a fiberboard cement substrate layer; coating a first major surface of the fiberboard cement substrate with a decorative coating; coating the exposed surface of the decorative coating with a topcoat layer; and curing the topcoat layer to provide an abrasion resistant siding. More preferably, the curing step comprises a process that does not require heating the siding to a board surface temperature in excess of 100° C.
Abstract:
A cement fiberboard substrate is treated on at least one edge of the substrate with an aqueous solution containing at least one phosphorus acid or salt of a phosphorus acid. The treated edge is overcoated with a sealer, primer or topcoat. The resulting prefinished fiber cement siding product has improved coating adhesion, especially near burnished regions and near edges and corners proximate the burnished regions. A phosphorus acid or salt of a phosphorus acid also may be added to the sealer to provide further improvement in coating adhesion.
Abstract:
A high reflectivity coated substrate and coating composition employing a binder that includes a cycloaliphatic group and contains a polyester resin having a number average molecular weight from about 1,000 to 40,000. The binder contains less than 40 weight percent aromatic group containing compound and the weight ratio of pigment to binder is greater than 0.9:1. When the binder is blended with rutile TiO2 at a solids loading of 50 weight percent and coated to a dried film thickness of 0.00254 cm, the coating exhibits a Y-value of at least 85.5.
Abstract:
A coated article is provided that includes a cement composite substrate; and a coating system applied to the substrate. The coating system includes an epoxy-functional coating composition applied to the substrate, and a water-based coating composition, distinct from the epoxy-functional coating composition, applied to the epoxy-based coating. between the compositions. A method is also provided that includes the steps of: providing a cement composite substrate; applying an epoxy-functional coating composition to the substrate; and applying a water-based coating composition, distinct from the epoxy-functional coating composition, to the epoxy-based coating. The water-based coating composition used in this method preferably comprises a polymer having one or more functional groups that can react with the epoxy-based coating to promote adhesion between the compositions.
