A process for making a hydrogenated product includes providing a clarified DAS-containing fermentation broth; distilling the broth under super atmospheric pressure at a temperature of >100° C. to about 300° C. to form an overhead that includes water and ammonia, and a liquid bottoms that includes SA, and at least about 20 wt % water; cooling the bottoms to a temperature sufficient to cause the bottoms to separate into a liquid portion in contact with a solid portion that is substantially pure SA; separating the solid portion from the liquid portion; recovering the solid portion; hydrogenating the solid portion in the presence of at least one hydrogenation catalyst to produce the hydrogenated product including at least one of THF, GBL or BDO; and recovering the hydrogenated product.

A process is disclosed for producing perfluoroolefins of the formula CF(R1f)═CF2, where R1f is F or CF3. The process involves (a) perfluorinating cyclobutanes of the formula where R2f is F or CF3, and where one R1 is H and the other R1 is H when R1f is F and is CH3 when R1f is CF3, by the Simons electrochemical fluorination process in an electrochemical cell in a solution of anhydrous liquid hydrogen fluoride under temperature and pressure conditions sufficient to replace all hydrogens in the cyclobutane of the above formula with fluorine; and (b) cracking the perfluorinated cyclobutane. A disclosed cracking involves contacting the perfluorinated cyclobutanes with carbon or a conductive metal, which is heated by induction heating to a temperature sufficient to crack the perfluorinated cyclobutanes.

This invention provides an improved process for the manufacture of 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane by the reaction of HF and trichloroethylene in the presence of a catalyst to form a mixture comprising 2-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane and, optionally, other organic by-products. The improvement resides in conducting the reaction in a single reaction zone while recovering the 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane from the mixture and recycling the 2-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane and, optionally, other organic by-products from the mixture to the reaction along with trichloroethylene and HF.
