The present invention relates to an additive to hydrocarbon fuels which includes nitrate of ethanolamine as an additive to reduce the quantity of smoke and improve the efficiency of combustion. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of this additive and of the fuels improved by the addition of the additive.
Abstract:
A process for producing an additive for hydrocarbon fuels by combining picric acid, powdered iron, an activating acid, and a liquid organic solvent. Alternatively, the powdered iron can first be washed with the activating acid and the rinsed with water or alcohol or water followed by alcohol; subsequently the washed and rinsed iron is combined with the picric acid and the liquid organic solvent. In the case of either alternative, hydroquinone can be added to the mixture in order to control undesired oxidation and corrosion, thereby further enhancing the stability of the additive.

A cetane improver for diesel fuels is a sulfur containing compound having at least one electron withdrawing group therein. The electron withdrawing group desirably is a carbonyl group.

The invention provides diesel fuel additive compositions comprising solutions of diesel fuel-soluble platinum group metal compounds in solvents miscible in the fuel, the platinum group metal complex being present in an amount sufficient to supply from 0.01 to 1.0 parts per million of the platinum group metal when added to a predetermined amount of fuel. Fuel compositions and methods employing them are also provided.

Coking in and around the injector nozzles of indirect injection compression ignition engines is reduced by means of distillate fuel with which has been blended suitable concentrations of (i) organic nitrate ignition accelerator, and (ii) a basic sulfurized alkaline earth metal alkyl phenate.Also described are additive mixtures of (i) and (ii) for use in distillate fuels in amounts sufficient to reduce the coking tendencies of such fuels when used in the operation of indirect injection compression ignition engines.

A mixture of aliphatic primary monohydric alcohol and alkoxyalkanol is continuously nitrated by reaction with a nitric-sulfuric acid mixture at -10.degree. to 15.degree. C. to yield an organic nitrate mixture containing substantial amounts of alkoxyalkyl nitrate useful as a cetane improver in diesel fuel.

The cetane rating of diesel fuel, both hydrocarbon and alcohol, is increased by adding a 1-alkylpiperidinol nitrate ester, e.g. 1-methyl-3 or 4-piperidinol nitrate.
