Such toxic substances are volatilized from substrates contaminated therewith by contacting them with carrier gas, such as a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and steam. The carrier gas and volatilized components are introduced into a partial oxidation zone of a gas generator where PCBs are completely destroyed at a temperature range of 2800.degree. F. to 3500.degree. F.

A system for disposing of solid waste which recovers a portion of the energy and materials value of the waste. The system includes a plurality of sealable containers for the solid waste, and a rotary kiln. An air cannon propels the containers into the vessel on a trajectory generally parallel to the axis of the vessel. The kiln is of the type including a cylindrical vessel containing materials to be processed therein. The vessel has first and second longitudinally opposite ends, and rotates about its longitudinal axis. A burner heats gases in the interior of the vessel for processing the material in the vessel. The temperature in the vessel progressively increases from the first end to the second end of the kiln.

Generally, methods include converting the sludge by burning the sludge to remove a majority of the organic fraction and produce an ash with inorganic materials in an amount of at least about 80% by weight of the ash and adding the ash to a plastic pyrolysis system in an effective amount to remove at least a portion of one or more contaminants from a plastic feed stream of the plastic pyrolysis system. Integrated recycling systems also are provided and include a fiber recovery system; a means for at least partially dewatering a sludge; a burner; and a pyrolyzer.

To provide a cement burning apparatus and a method of method of drying high-water-content organic waste capable of drying organic waste with high water content precluding the possibility of explosion; not incurring decreased thermal efficiency of a cement kiln; and more efficiently drying organic waste with high water content. The cement burning apparatus 1 comprises a dryer 6, to which combustion gas is fed from an exhaust gas passage, which runs from an outlet duct of a calciner 4 to an outlet duct of a preheater 3 of a cement kiln 2, for drying high-water-content organic waste of which water content is 40 mass percent or more. As the dryer 6, a grinding-type flash dryer, which directly contacts the combustion gas G with the organic waste W and dries the organic waste W while grinding it, can be used. Since oxygen concentration in the combustion gas extracted from the range described above is low, there is no danger of explosion, and temperature thereof is 450 to 900° so that the organic waste may sufficiently be dried. The cement burning apparatus may further comprise the second exhaust gas passage 8 for returning gas exhausted from the dryer 6 to the above-mentioned range.
