Process for preparing a virus disease live vaccine by employing culture of a quail embryonated egg or tissue culture of a quail embryo fibroblast for cultivation of the virus. The vaccine obtained according to the present invention is effective for immunization of animals and humans against the virus disease. The vaccine is avirulent, scarcely subject to induction of unfavorable factors accompanying the present tissue used for isolation of the virus therefrom, and economically productible.

An apparatus for growing animal cells of this invention comprises tubes with a hole near bottom of each tube and a variable angle tube holder. Cells may be attached and proliferated in the tubes which contain a nutrient medium, which can be removed simply from the tubes through holes by changing the angle of the tubes. Cell sheets in many tubes can be washed simply, rapidly and simultaneously.

A TGE virus is attenuated in organ culture of the colon of swine. After a number of passages, the resulting attenuated virus, if administered to swine will not seriously damage the villi of the small intestine, so that absorption of protein and other vital materials is not seriously hampered. The swine may suffer slight side effects, but are then immune to virulent TGE virus which is normally fatal to piglets.
