摘要: An inflatable occupant restraint device in an occupant protection system of a vehicle including a housing mounted in the vehicle and having an interior, at least one deployable airbag contained within the housing interior prior to deployment, an inflator coupled to the housing for inflating the airbag, the airbag being attached to and in fluid communication with the inflator, and an initiator for initiating a gas supply mechanism in the inflator to supply gas into the interior of the airbag in response to a crash of the vehicle. The airbag is made of a first non-perforated sheet of film and a member arranged in connection with the film sheet for arresting the propagation of a tear in the film sheet. The member is (i) a network of at least bi-directional material strips or (ii) a second non-perforated sheet of film having substantially anisotropic tear properties whereby the direction of least tear resistance of the second sheet of film is different than a direction of least tear resistance of the first sheet of film.

摘要: A headrest and headrest positioning system reduces whiplash injuries from rear impacts by properly positioning the headrest behind the occupant's head either continuously, or just prior to and in anticipation of, the vehicle impact and then properly supports both the head and neck. Sensors determine the location of the occupant's head and motors move the headrest both up and down and forward and back as needed. In one implementation, the headrest is continuously adjusted to maintain a proper orientation of the headrest to the rear of the occupant's head. In another implementation, an anticipatory crash, is used to predict that a rear impact is about to occur, in which event, the headrest is moved proximate to the occupant. A pre-inflated airbag within the headrest automatically distributes the pressure to evenly support both the head and neck.

摘要: A sensor system for initiating deployment of an occupant protection apparatus in a motor vehicle, such as an airbag, to protect an occupant of the vehicle in a crash. The system includes a sensor mounted to the vehicle for sensing accelerations of the vehicle and producing an analog signal representative thereof; an electronic converter for receiving the analog signal from the sensor and for converting the analog signal into a digital signal, and a processor which receives the digital signal. The processor includes a pattern recognition system and produces a deployment signal when the pattern recognition system determines that the digital signal contains a pattern characteristic of a vehicle crash requiring occupant protection. A deployment initiation mechanism is coupled to the processor and, responsive to the deployment signal, initiates deployment of the occupant protection apparatus.

摘要: This invention includes crash sensors designed to be used for frontal impact sensing and the strategies of using these sensors. It is analyzed and shown that for cases where the passenger compartment mounted discriminating sensor is used as a backup to forward crush zone mounted crash sensors or where the vehicle occupant is wearing a seat belt, that spring mass sensors can be used. In addition, spring mass sensors can also be used as arming or safing sensors. In all cases, provision must be made to minimize the effects of cross-axis vibrations on such sensors as taught by this invention. Such sensors can be made with housings of plastic. A preferred embodiment of this invention utilizes a mass supported and biased by a beam contact which is attached to a housing. These sensors are useful for sensing frontal impacts in the passenger compartment both as primary sensors and as single or dual contact arming sensors. They can also be combined by placing two sensors within a single housing and, in some cases, the same mass can be used for both sensors. Finally, they can be used in electro-mechanical and in all mechanical air bag systems. It is further taught that the response of all spring biased sensors can be improved by making the at rest bias substantially less than the bias at actuation.

摘要: A crash sensor, designed for arrangement in the crush zone of a motor vehicle, is operative to determine when and if a crash is severe enough to deploy the passive restraint system (e.g. airbag or seat belt tensioner) of the vehicle. The sensor is responsive to trigger the passive restraint system when the vehicle impact with a barrier causes vehicle elements in the crush zone to deform as far back as the sensor position.

摘要: Conventional ball-in-tube, gas-damped, crash sensors utilize a gold plated ball to bridge two contacts. When the ball senses acceleration (deceleration) in the longitudinal direction of a cylinder of sufficient magnitude and duration, it moves to where it bridges the contacts, completing the electrical circuit and initiating deployment of a safety restraint system. The contact duration of this type of sensor is significantly affected by bouncing of the contacts after being hit by the sensing mass and by the accelerations in directions perpendicular to the axis of the tube. This sometimes results in no triggering, or late triggering, of the sensor. A switch activated by magnetic flux is combined with this type of gas-damped sensor to provide a solid and reliable contact duration and ensure the correct functioning of the sensor. The level of biasing force for crash zone crash sensors of this type has been increased to avoid late firing problems on marginal crashes.

摘要: A tunable patch antenna includes a dielectric substrate having first and second surfaces. An electrically-conductive sheet is coupled to the first surface, and a patch assembly is coupled to the second surface. The patch assembly includes an electrically-conductive base fixedly coupled to the second surface and an electrically-conductive disk rotatably coupled to the substrate. The base has a substantially circular void wherein a perimeter region of the base circumscribes the void. The base has an electrically-conductive run extending from the perimeter region to a feedpoint location within the void. The disk has a diameter greater than a diameter of the void such that the disk is in contact with the perimeter region of the base. The disk has a slot cut through it that is aligned with a center of the disk.

The communication device communicates to the remote location upon occurrence of the event. The location determining device may be arranged partially or entirely on the vehicle or elsewhere. The remote location may be an emergency response center which can direct aid to the vehicle's location.

摘要: Wireless sensing and communication system including sensors located on the vehicle, in the roadway or in the vicinity of the vehicle or roadway and which provide information which is transmitted to one or more interrogators in the vehicle by a wireless radio frequency mechanism. Power to operate a particular sensor is supplied by the interrogator or the sensor is independently connected to either a battery, generator, vehicle power source or some source of power external to the vehicle. The sensors can provide information about the vehicle and its interior or exterior environment, about individual components, systems, vehicle occupants, subsystems, or about the roadway, ambient atmosphere, travel conditions and external objects. The sensors arranged on the roadway or ancillary structures would include pressure sensors, temperature sensors, moisture content or humidity sensors, and friction sensors.
