A U-shaped latch is positioned within a pocket at each end of the insulative housing. The U-shaped latch is of metal and has two legs joined by a bight, the two legs being flexible as the module is rotated into a slot in the insulative housing. The U-shaped latch includes a tab extending around an upwardly extending projection on the backwall of the housing to provide additional support to the latch. The latch thus provides means for holding the module securely within the housing after rotation to an upright position.

A hand tool (10) for loading semiconductor chip carriers (30) from a supply magazine (32) into respective sockets (200) for connection to electronic circuitry is disclosed. The hand tool (10) has a loading channel (114) at the front of the load head (110) through which each chip carrier (30) passes as they are loaded into the socket (200). In order to facilitate the loading of each chip carrier (30), admitting slots (162) are provided in the walls of the loading channel (114). The admitting slots (114) are dimensioned to correspond to spaces provided between individual terminals (34) of the chip carrier (30), so that as each chip carrier (30) is loaded from the supply magazine (32) into the socket (200), the admitting slots (162) cooperate with the terminals (34) of the chip carrier (30) to insure that the chip carrier (30) will be precisely positioned in the socket (200). This permits an operator to accurately and rapidly load the chip carrier (30) directly from the supply magazine (32) into the socket (200).

The invention is directed to an electrical connector (2) for electrically connecting contact surfaces (74) of a daughter board (18) to contact areas (46) of mother board (34). The connector (2) has contacts (36) positioned therein, the connector (2) having posts (38) which extend from the connector (2) and make electrical engagement with contact areas (46) of the mother board (34). The daughter board (18) is then inserted into the connector (2) under reduced or zero insertion force conditions and rotated to its operating position. As this rotation occurs, contact projections (60, 72) of the contacts (36) engage the contact surfaces (74) of the daughter board (18). The rotation is translated into a positive wiping action between the contact projections (60, 72) and the contact surfaces (74), thereby ensuring that a positive electrical connection is effected. The resilient nature of the contacts (36) ensures that this wiping action occurs under normal force conditions. The configuration and characteristics, i.e. the low spring rate of the spring portion (68), allow the contacts (36) to be used many times without taking a permanent set, thereby ensuring that a positive electrical connection is effected with each use. To prevent the daughter board (18) from warpage and bowing during use, a support member (88) is provided which cooperates with the board (18). The support member (88) not only maintains the board (18) in proper position, but also acts as a shielding member if required.

The latch arm is relatively short while the spring arm is of sufficient length to permit deflection thereof when the terminal is placed in service. The two arms have free ends which are adjacent to and resiliently biased against each other. The free ends are latched to each other by latching means which permits movement of the free end of the spring arm along a side edge of the latch arm. An edge portion of the spring arm serves as a contact portion and current flows from this contact portion to the end of the spring arm then to the latch arm and to the yoke portion of the terminal to provide a short low inductance current path for the current. The spring arm is in a preloaded and flexed condition so that an elevated contact pressure is achieved.
