The ungelled copolymer composition includes a functional group-containing copolymer that includes segments of alternating residues derived from a donor monomer composition comprising an acceptor monomer composition. The donor monomer composition includes one or both of isobutylene and diisobutylene, and the acceptor monomer composition includes acrylic monomers and monomers containing functional groups. The ungelled copolymer composition is substantially free of transition metals and Lewis acids, and the copolymer is substantially free of maleate-type monomer residues and fumarate-type monomer residues. The crosslinking agent has at least two functional groups that are reactive with the functional groups of the copolymer. The thermosetting composition may be in liquid, powder, or dispersed form and may be applied by traditional or electrocoating methods.

A method of coating metallic substrates with weldable primer and at least one powder coating is provided by the present invention. The base powder coating contains flake pigments that align parallel to the surface when the powder coating is heated. Optionally, a clear top coating is applied over the base powder coating. Substrates coated by the method of coating are also provided. The method of coating allows substrates coated with weldable primer to be assembled into assemblies or finished parts by welding, and then to be coated with the powder basecoat and clear coat. The parts prepared have striking visual effects and performance comparable to conventional automotive parts but are prepared more efficiently and economically.

Disclosed are thermosetting compositions which are comprised of a resinous phase dispersed in an aqueous medium, the resinous phase comprising (a) an ungelled active hydrogen group-containing polymer which contains amine salt groups, the polymer having been prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization in the presence of an initiator having at least one radically transferable group, and (b) a curing agent having at least two functional groups which are reactive with the active hydrogen groups of (a). The active hydrogen group-containing polymers of the thermosetting compositions, which are prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization, have narrow molecular weight distributions and well-defined, specifically tailored polymer architecture which can provide enhanced crosslink density and dispersibility of the thermosetting compositions. Also disclosed is a method of electrocoating a conductive substrate using the thermosetting compositions of the invention, and a substrate coated by this method.

A pigment dispersion comprising pigment, an aqueous carrier selected from water and a mixture of water and at least one organic solvent, and a pigment dispersant is described. The pigment dispersant is prepared by polymerizing (i) at least one prepolymer having a radically polymerizable group, and (ii) at least one second monomer. The prepolymer is prepared by controlled radical polymerization, e.g., atom transfer radical polymerization, of at least one radically polymerizable first monomer. The second monomer forms a polymeric backbone segment of the pigment dispersant, and the prepolymer forms polymeric segments that are pendent to the backbone. The backbone segment of the pigment dispersant is hydrophilic, while at least a portion of each pendent polymeric segment is hydrophobic.

An improved electrodepositable composition is provided comprising: (a) an active hydrogen-containing cationic resin electrodepositable on a cathode; (b) a capped polyisocyanate curing agent; and (c) an organotin-containing catalyst. The improvement comprises the addition to the electrodepositable composition of a water immiscible acid functional compound having a hydrocarbon chain of at least 5 carbon atoms. The composition provides improved cure response and appearance properties when electrodeposited over conductive substrates.

An electrodepositable composition that has: (A) an active hydrogen-containing cationic resin, electrodepositable on a cathode, having: (1) a polyepoxide; (2) an oxygen-substituted diamine compound having the following formula: ##STR1## where n is an integer from 2 to 4; and where R.sup.1 or R.sup.2 are the same or different and either one or both contain at least one oxygen and are alkyl, cycloalkyl, substituted alkyl, or substituted cycloalkyl having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are alkanol groups having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, or R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and the N atom form a cyclic group which is substituted or unsubstituted such as morpholine and 1-(3-aminopropyl) imidazole; and (B) at least partially blocked isocyanate or polyisocyanate curing agent. The diamine compound of Formula I can be used alone or in conjunction with one or more secondary amines, nonhydroxy group containing amines and/or amines with ring structures. Optionally, the polyepoxide can be chain extended with active hydrogen-containing compounds other than polyoxyalkylene polyamines. Also provided is a method of producing an active hydrogen-containing cationic resin composition, electrodepositable on a cathode, comprised of (a) mixing together in a suitable reaction vessel a polyepoxide, or the precursors of the polyepoxide, a polycarboxylic acid, a blocked isocyanate curing agent; (b) adding to the mixture of (a) a base catalyst and the diamine compound of Formula I; (c) polymerizing the mixture of (b) to form a resinous composition; and (d) neutralizing the resinous composition of (c) by adding the resinous composition to a dilute mixture of acid and water to form an aqueous dispersed electrodepositable cationic resin composition.
