Abstract: A compressor may include a shell, a non-orbiting scroll, an orbiting scroll, and a discharge valve member. The shell may define a discharge chamber. The non-orbiting scroll may be disposed within the discharge chamber and includes a first end plate and a first spiral wrap extending from the first end plate. The orbiting scroll may be disposed within the discharge chamber and includes a second end plate and a second spiral wrap extending from the second end plate. The first and second spiral wraps mesh with each other to define fluid pockets therebetween. The second end plate includes a discharge passage extending therethrough. The discharge valve member may be attached to the second end plate and may be movable between an open position allowing fluid flow from the discharge passage to the discharge chamber and a closed position restricting fluid flow from the discharge passage to the discharge chamber.

The orbiting scroll member (22) may be rotatably coupled to the driveshaft (16) and may be meshingly engaged with the non-orbiting scroll member (24). The orbiting scroll member (22) may include a recess (96) that is moved between a first position in fluid communication with the first lubricant supply path and a second position fluidly isolated from the first lubricant supply path.

The electronics module may include a back plate having an opening through which the terminal fence may be received. The back plate may include an engagement feature and a spring element. The engagement feature may removably engage the terminal fence. The spring element may contact the shell and bias the back plate away from the shell.

Abstract: A refrigeration system includes first and second compressors and an oil separator. The oil separator includes an inlet for receiving refrigerant and oil from the first compressor, a refrigerant outlet, and an oil outlet. The oil separator separates the oil from the refrigerant. A portion of the oil separator below a horizontal plane intersecting the refrigerant outlet collects separated oil and has a volume equal to a first compressor oil supply. The first compressor oil supply is greater than or equal to 100% and less than or equal to 250% of a first compressor initial oil charge. The first compressor receives oil from the oil outlet when an amount of oil in the portion is less than or equal to the first compressor oil supply. The second compressor receives oil from the refrigerant outlet when the amount of oil in the portion is greater than the first compressor oil supply.

The method includes: determining a d-axis resistance of an electric motor and a Q-axis resistance of the electric motor as a function of a bulk current; determining a d-axis inductance of the electric motor and a Q-axis inductance of the electric motor as a function of the bulk current; generating an estimated flux of the electric motor based on the d-axis resistance of the electric motor, the Q-axis resistance of the electric motor, the d-axis inductance of the electric motor, and the Q-axis inductance of the electric motor; generating an estimated angle of the electric motor based on the estimated flux of the electric motor; and, based on the estimated angle of the electric motor, controlling switching of an inverter that powers the electric motor.

Abstract: An indication system is provided and includes evaluation, messaging, and display modules and a display. The evaluation module generates a message based on a parameter of a compressor or a drive. The messaging module: generates a message based on the parameter; generates a string of glyphs based on the message; selects a predetermined number of glyphs in the string of glyphs; generates column data for the selected glyphs; and generates packets including the column data. The display module generates output signals based on the packets. The display includes an array of LEDs, does not include a transistor, and illuminates the LEDs based on the output signals. The display module is configured to generate the output signals to illuminate one or more of the LEDS in a column-by-column format, such that power is only provided to one column of the array of LEDs at any moment in time.

Abstract: A system includes a sensor and a controller for a refrigeration or HVAC system having a compressor. The sensor senses a temperature of the compressor during operation of the compressor. The controller is configured to determine a rate of change of the temperature relative to time and to perform one or more procedures to protect the compressor based on the rate of change of the temperature. The one or more procedures to protect the compressor include shutting down the compressor, throttling a pressure regulator valve of an evaporator associated with the compressor, adjusting an expansion valve associated with the evaporator, reducing speed of the compressor, and partially or wholly unloading the compressor.

Abstract: A compressor according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a shell, a compression mechanism, a driveshaft, a drive bearing cavity, and a drive bearing. The compression mechanism is disposed within the shell and includes an orbiting scroll member and a non-orbiting scroll member. The orbiting scroll member includes a baseplate and a tubular portion extending axially from the baseplate. The driveshaft is drivingly engaged with the orbiting scroll member. The drive bearing cavity is disposed between an outer radial surface of the driveshaft and an inner radial surface of the tubular portion of the orbiting scroll member. The baseplate of the orbiting scroll member defines a first discharge passage in fluid communication with the drive bearing cavity. The drive bearing is disposed in the drive bearing cavity and is disposed about the driveshaft adjacent to the first end of the driveshaft.

The first scroll member is disposed within the shell and may include a first end plate having a discharge passage, and first and second bypass passages extending through the first end plate. The partition plate is disposed within the shell and separates the discharge-pressure region from the suction-pressure region and includes an opening in communication with the discharge-pressure region. The bypass valve member is movable between a first position restricting fluid flow through at least one of the first and second bypass passages and the opening and a second position in allowing fluid flow through the at least one of the first and second bypass passages and the opening.

Abstract: A compressor crankcase heating control method for a heat pump system includes selectively actuating a first switching device to connect and disconnect first and second power lines to and from second and third switching devices, respectively, the first and second power lines receive a first voltage. The compressor crankcase heating control method further includes, when the first and second power lines are disconnected from the second and third switching devices via the first switching device, actuating the second and third switching devices thereby connecting third and fourth power lines to ends, respectively, of at least one winding of a stator of an electric motor of a compressor. The at least one winding of the stator of the electric motor heats the crankcase of the compressor. The third and fourth power lines receive a second voltage that is less than the first voltage.
