Lower alkenes of from 2 to 5 carbon atoms, such as propene, are produced by the vapor phase catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of lower alkane, such as propane, using a mixed metal oxide catalyst of formula (1) as decribed, containing manganese and at least one additional metal as essential elements, e.g., Mn1Sb0.15Ox, Mn1P0.2Ox, Mn1S0.15W0.05Cr0.1Ox. The lower alkene may be further oxidatively dehydrogenated using a mixed metal oxide catalyst of formula (1), especially formula (2), as described, to produce a mixture of unsaturated aldehyde and unsaturated acid. The unsaturated aldehyde may be further oxidatively dehydrogenated in the vapor phase in the presence of mixed metal oxide catalyst of formula (1), especially formula (3).

The present invention provides a process for producing acrolein and acrylic acid by the vapor-phase oxidation of propylene in the presence of Mo—Bi—Fe-based compound oxide catalysts packed in a fixed-bed multitubular reactor wherein acrolein and acrylic acid can be stably produced in high yield for a long period of time. This process is characterized in that each reaction tube having two or more reaction zones disposed along the axis of the tube is packed with catalysts having different ratios of the Bi and/or Fe content to the Mo content in such a way that the ratio decreases from the gas inlet side toward the gas outlet side.

The object of the present invention is to provide a process in which, when the unsaturated carboxylic acid is produced, or when the unsaturated aldehyde and/or the unsaturated carboxylic acid are produced by carrying out the catalytic gas phase oxidation reaction by using the fixed-bed multitubular reactor which is packed with the molybdenum-containing catalyst, the reaction can be continued for a long time while a high yield is maintained, regardless of where the hot spot portion occurs and also even if the concentration of the raw gas is high. To solve this object, the present invention production process for an unsaturated carboxylic acid is characterized in: a particulate catalysts including, as catalytic components, an oxide and/or a complex oxide including Mo and V, or Mo, Fe and Bi as essential components, and having a hole are used; and a catalyst-packed layer of each reaction tube of the fixed-bed multitubular reactor is divided into at least two reaction zones in a tubular axial direction, wherein the packing of the catalysts is such that the diameters of the holes of the catalysts differ between at least two of the reaction zones.

A tube reactor (2) for performing exothermic gas phase reactions comprising a reaction tube bundle (8), that extends in a sealed manner between two tube end plates (4, 6), that carries a reaction gas and is surrounded by a heat carrier inside a surrounding reactor shell (10). The tube reactor also includes a cowl (18, 20) that spans the respective tube plates (4, 6) and is connected to a gas inlet and a gas discharge line, respectively. Inside the cowl (18) on the gas inlet side adjacent to a first gas supply chamber (28), connected to the inside of the reaction tubes (16), is located a separately fed second gas supply chamber (30) with its own tube end plate (32) that is connected to separate gas supply tubes (34) suitable for a second reaction gas. The separate gas supply tubes reach into the gas inlet end or reach to directly before the gas inlet ends of the reaction tubes (16). This avoids early admixing of an explosion-critical reactant into the reaction gas stream using relatively simple and practical means of construction, which in turn improves the ability to load the reaction gas stream with this reactant.

A catalyst suited for catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of isobutylene, t-butanol or propylene to produce respectively corresponding unsaturated aldehyde and unsaturated carboxylic acid is provided. Said catalyst consists of ring-formed shaped bodies composed of (i) a catalyst composition containing at least molybdenum and bismuth as the active ingredients and (ii) inorganic fibers. The catalyst excels in mechanical strength, can give the object products at high yield and shows little activity degradation with time.
