    摘要: Composites which include a polymer matrix having natural free volume therein and an inorganic or organic material disposed in the natural free volume of the polymer matrix are disclosed. In addition, methods for making a composite are described. A polymer matrix having free volume therein is provided. The free volume is evacuated, and inorganic or organic molecules are infused into the evacuated free volume of the polymer matrix. The inorganic or organic molecules can then be polymerized under conditions effective to cause the polymerized inorganic or organic molecules to assemble into nanoparticles or other types of macromolecular networks. Alternatively, where the polymer matrix contains a functionality, the inorganic or organic molecules can be treated under conditions effective to cause the inorganic or organic molecules to interact with the polymer matrix's functionality. Use of the disclosed composites as photoradiation shields and filters, electromagnetic radiation shields and filters, antistatic layers, heterogeneous catalysts, conducting electrodes, materials having flame and heat retardant properties, components in the construction of electrolytic cells, fuel cells, and optoelectronic devices, and antifouling coatings is also described.

    摘要: A method for making modified poly(ethylene oxide) by graft polymerizing thereto organic monomers containing a trialkoxy silane functional group or a moiety that reacts with water to form a silanol group, such as methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane, onto the poly(ethylene oxide) is disclosed. The graft polymerization is accomplished by mixing the poly(ethylene oxide), the silane-containing monomer(s) and an initiator and applying heat. Preferably, the method is a reactive-extrusion process. The resulting modified poly(ethylene oxide) has improved water absorption characteristics and melt processabilities and may be used to make thermally processed articles, such as fibers, films and foams, that have improved properties over articles similarly processed from unmodified poly(ethylene oxide).

    摘要: The present invention relates to a graft polymer having a backbone moiety and at least one moiety grafted onto the backbone moiety where the backbone and grafted moieties are a hydrophobe and an amine or amide. The graft copolymer may have either a hydrophobic backbone or a mixed amine/hydrophobic backbone with a grafted amine or amide moiety; or an amine functional backbone with a grafted hydrophobic moiety. The backbone may be polymeric or non-polymeric. The graft copolymer may be used to deliver an active ingredient onto a substrate. The active ingredient may be associated, coated or encapsulated by the graft copolymer. The graft copolymer can be designed to have a pH triggerable solubility, providing a means to control the release of an active ingredient at a desired pH level.
