    摘要: A vehicle includes an internal combustion engine configured to power a hydraulic pump to pressurize hydraulic fluid, which is used to power the vehicle directly or is stored in an accumulator. A drive module, including a hydraulic pump/motor and a multi-speed mechanical transmission, is operatively coupled to drive wheels of the vehicle to provide motive power to the vehicle. The drive module can also include a second hydraulic motor (or multiple hydraulic motors) configured to provide motive power. The transmission is configured to progress through its gears at ratio shifts of no less than 2:1 between adjacent gear positions. The transmission is configured to place the hydraulic motor in neutral during some portions of vehicle operation, and to engage the motor during other portions of vehicle operation.

    摘要: A variable displacement engine comprises two engine modules fed from a common fuel source, each engine module having an individual crankshaft. The first engine module has a high compression ratio (e.g., greater than 13:1), while the second module has a typical compression ratio for a gasoline engine (e.g., between 9:1 and 11:1). In one embodiment, the first engine module operates through high efficiency optimized alcohol fuel combustion when the fuel content exceeds a minimum alcohol content. In an alternative embodiment, the first engine module operates at high efficiency through gasoline HCCI combustion when conditions permit. When operating conditions do not permit the first engine module to operate at high efficiency, the second engine module operates as the primary engine module, with the first engine module available to provide supplemental power (at less than optimal efficiency) if needed to meet driver demand.

    摘要: A turbocharged engine system is configured to vaporize methanol using heat from exhaust gases and uses the vaporized methanol to drive the engine's turbocharger. The methanol may also be dissociated into hydrogen and carbon monoxide. After passing through the turbocharger, the vapor is injected into the engine by port injection. By selective timing of exhaust valves, the exhaust gases are separated into two streams, a first stream comprising gases ejected during exhaust blowdown, and a second stream of gases ejected during the remainder of the engine's exhaust stroke. The blowdown gases are employed to drive a separate turbine of the turbocharger.

    摘要: A fluid bearing includes hydrostatic pads formed in a surface and positioned to exert a separating force, and a land formed on the surface of the insert and configured to act as a bushing to allow rotation while the first and second pads are pressurized at less than a hydrostatic balance force. Pressurized fluid to the pads of the insert is controlled to prevent operation in full hydrostatic mode. More particularly, a separating force generated by surface force of the pads is controlled such that the separating force does not exceed a force exerted on the bearing. The fluid pressure is also controlled to keep the separating force within a selected margin of the force exerted on the bearing, to control wear of the bearing. Control of the separating force is achieved by selectively pressurizing individual hydrostatic pads, thereby effectively varying the active hydrostatic area of the bearing.

    摘要: A hydraulic accumulator includes a rigid tank containing a flexible but non-elastic bladder formed of a metal foil and separating the interior of the tank into a gas space and a liquid space. The gas and liquid spaces respectively communicate with exterior sources of gas and liquid through fixtures provided on the accumulator tank. One of the fixtures is provided with an anti-extrusion valve to prevent the bladder from being forced out through the fixture. In one preferred embodiment the bladder is a bellows. In another preferred embodiment the accumulator tank is provided with a vent in communication with the liquid space within the tank to allow for venting of any gas separating from the liquid and accumulating within the liquid space.
