Abstract: A method of making a (meth)acrylate copolymer having pendent phosphate-containing groups and a pressure-sensitive adhesive that contains the (meth)acrylate copolymer having pendent phosphate-containing groups are provided. The method includes reacting a precursor (meth)acrylate copolymer having pendent carboxylic acid groups with an epoxy-functionalized phosphate compound. The pendent phosphate-containing groups on the reaction product can function as a flame retardant for the pressure-sensitive adhesive.

Abstract: An adherable film includes a substrate that is substantially free of a flame retardant material and has a top major surface and a bottom major surface. An adhesive layer disposed on the bottom major surface of the substrate has a continuous pattern. The adhesive layer is made of an adhesive that is substantially free of a flame retardant material. In a plan view, the continuous pattern defines a plurality of discontinuous non-adhesive portions of the substrate without the adhesive. Each discontinuous non-adhesive portion is completely surrounded by the continuous pattern. The adherable film including the adhesive layer having the continuous pattern exhibits an improved flame retarding characteristic relative to a discontinuous adherable film having a substrate with a same material composition as that of the substrate of the adherable film and a discontinuous adhesive layer with a same material composition as that of the adhesive layer of the adherable film.

Abstract: Embodiments herein include intumescent caulking compositions and methods related thereto. In an embodiment, an intumescent caulking composition is included having a nitrogen phosphorus component and an expandable graphite. The composition can exhibit a char expansion ratio of at least 8, a char strength of at least 8 N, and a caulk rate of greater than 100 gm/min after 1 day. In an embodiment, an intumescent caulking composition is included having at least about 5 wt. % ethylene diamine phosphate, at least about 5 wt. % expandable graphite, and at least about 30 wt. % of an elastomeric binder. In an embodiment, a method of making an intumescent caulking composition is included. In an embodiment, a method of using an intumescent caulking composition is included. In an embodiment, a method of enhancing the fire retardancy of a wall or floor is included. Other embodiments are also included herein.

Abstract: Adhesives comprising: a) 35-85 weight percent of a pressure sensitive adhesive comprising: i) a polymer selected from rubbers and polyacrylate polymers and ii) optionally one or more tackifiers; and dispersed therein b) 15-50 weight percent fire retardant (FR) particles comprising one or more phosphorus-containing compounds selected from organophosphine oxides and organophosphi-nates. In some embodiments, the phosphorus-containing compounds comprise 35-65 weight percent of an organophosphine oxide and 65-35 weight percent of an organophosphinate. The FR particles may have a D50 particle size of 1-120 micrometers, 40-120 micrometers, or 70-120 micrometers. Adhesive films comprising the adhesives described herein may be free-standing adhesive films or adhesive layers comprised in tapes.

Abstract: Pressure sensitive adhesives and tapes having flame-retardant properties include a substrate layer and a layer of pressure sensitive adhesive disposed on the substrate layer. The pressure sensitive adhesive is a UV-cured composition of a curable composition. The curable composition includes a polymerizable (meth)acrylate-based mixture, a polymerizable aromatic (meth)acrylate oligomer, a liquid flame retarding agent, and at least one UV initiator. The UV-cured composition is an optically clear pressure sensitive adhesive with flame retarding properties.
