THERMOPLASTIC MOLDING COMPOSITIONS ARE PREPARED FROM A MIXTURE OF A LINEAR SATURATED POLYESTER AND AN A-OLEFIN POLYMER OR COPOLYMER WHICH HAS BEEN TERMINALLY CARBOXYLATED BY CONTROLLED OXIDATION. THESE MIXTURES ARE DISTINGUISHED BY INCREASED IMPACT STRENGTH, GOOD DISPERSION OF THE OLEFIN PHASE, AND A HIGH DEGREE OF STABILITY AND COMPATIBILITY.
Abstract:
Glass fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polymer composite sheets are formed using semicrystalline polymers that have their glass transition temperature above room temperature and may be cold formed, i.e., shaped in a cold mold when preheated outside the mold. Glass-reinforced low molecular weight polyethylene terephthalate, or blends thereof, may be shaped in a cold mold, and exhibit excellent performance.

GLASS FIBER-REINFORCED, NOVACULITE-FILLED PET COMPOSITE SHEETS ARE FORMED USING SEMI-CRYSTALLINE PET HAVING ITS GLASS TRANSISTION TEMPERATURE ABOVE ROOM TEMPERATURE. THESE COMPOSITE SHEETS CAN BE COLD FORMED, I.E. SHAPED IN A COLD MOLD WHEN PREHEATED OUTSIDE THE MOLD, AND POSSESS PHYSICAL PROPERTIES SUPERIOR TO SHEETS PREPARED USING UNFILLED PET OR PET CONTAINING FILLERS OTHER THAN NOVACULITE.
Abstract:
Glass fiber-reinforced ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene composite sheets are formable into shaped objects in a mold at ambient temperatures solely by moderate preheating of the sheet outside of the mold. This polymer comprising a high molecular weight, tough copolymer of ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene in an approximate 1:1 mol ratio is inherently nonflammable in air. A glass fiber of controlled length increases the mechanical properties of the composite structure and allows fabrication into suitable shapes without detracting from the nonflammable properties of the polymeric composite.

NOVACULITE-FILLED, GLASS-REINFORCED POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE COMPOSITIONS SUITABLE FOR INJECTION MOLDING IN STANDARD INJECTION MOLDING APPARATUS ARE DISCLOSED. THE TRICOMPONENT COMPOSITE CAN BE PROCESSED WITHOUT POLYMER OF FILLER PRETREATMENT AND HAS DESIRABLE PROPERTIES AT ROOM, AS WELL AS AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES. POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE COMPOSITIONS FILLED WITH NOVACULITE OF SELECTED SIZE DISTRIBUTION IN THE ABSENCE OF GLASS FIBERS IS ITSELF A DISTINCTIVELY USEFUL COMPOSITION.
