An aqueous coating composition comprising an autoxidizable polyester resin having ≧30 wt % of fatty acid residues; a Tg in the range of from −60° C. to +35° C.; an acid value greater than 15 mg KOH/g and less than 75 mg KOH/g; a Mw in the range of from 2,500 to 100,000 g/mol; the composition having a co-solvent content less that 15 wt % by weight of total composition; a solids content >30 wt %; and when in the form of a film, the composition has a telegraphing value of less than 20 gloss units.

The present invention relates to an aqueous coating composition comprising dispersed polymer particles, wherein (i) the dispersed polymer particles are polyurethane-vinyl polymer hybrid particles obtained by free-radical polymerization of at least one vinyl monomer in the presence of a polyurethane, (ii) the polyurethane and the vinyl polymer in the hybrid particles are present in a weight ratio of polyurethane to vinyl polymer ranging from 1:1 to 20:1, (iii) the polyurethane is the reaction product of at least the following components: (a) from 5 to 40 wt. % of at least one organic difunctional isocyanate, (b) from 0.5 to 4 wt. % of an isocyanate-reactive compound containing ionic or potentially ionic water-dispersing groups having a molecular weight of from 100 to 500 g/mol, (c) from 40 to 80 wt. % of at least one diol having a molecular weight from 500 to 5000, (d) from 0 to 10 wt. % of at least one active-hydrogen chain extending compound with a functionality of at least 2 (other than water), (e) from 0 to 10 wt. % of at least one diol having a molecular weight below 500 g/mol, where the amounts of (a), (b), (c), (d) and (e) are given relative to the total amount of components used to prepare the polyurethane from which the building blocks of the polyurethane are emanated, and where the isocyanate and hydroxy groups on the components used to prepare the polyurethane are present in a respective mole ratio (NCO to OH) in the range of from 0.8:1 to 5:1, preferably from 1.05:1 to 5:1 and even more preferably from 1.1:1 to 3.5:1.

There is described a process for preparing an silane-functional oligomer (such as an alkoxysilane polyurethane) suitable for use as a crosslinkable coating component, the process comprising the steps of: 1) reacting an aminoalkyl silane with a cyclic carbonate, lactone or lactam to form a hydroxyl (OH) or imino (NH) functional silane intermediate, 2) reacting the silane intermediate from step 1) (optionally immediately without isolation) with a diisocyanate (diNCO) to form a silane functional polyurethane; where in step 2) the molar ratio of the total amount OH or NH groups on the silane intermediate of step 1) to the diisocyanate is from 1.8 to 2.2 (preferably about 2.0) and the resultant silane polymer is substantially-free of isocyanate groups thereon.

There is described a process for preparing a Schiff base crosslinkable aqueous dispersion of a polyurethane A (PUD) the process comprising (a) reacting components (1) to (4) as present to form an acidic isocyanate terminated prepolymer that comprises anionic or potentially anionic functional groups thereon; where: (1) component one comprises 10 to 80% by weight of at least one polyisocyanate optionally containing at least one anionic or potentially anionic dispersing group; (2) optional component two comprises up to 15% by weight of at least one isocyanate-reactive polyol containing at least one anionic or potentially anionic dispersing group; (3) component three comprises 15 to 85% by weight of at least one isocyanate reactive polyol other than component two if present, and having a weight average molecular weight greater than or equal to 500 Daltons optionally containing at least one anionic or potentially anionic dispersing group; and (4) optional component four comprises up to 20% by weight of at least one isocyanate reactive polyol other than component three and two if present and having a weight average molecular weight less than 500 Daltons; where if component two is not present component one or three contains at least one anionic or potentially anionic dispersing group; where the amounts of components one to four are expressed as a weight percentage calculated from the total amount of the above components (i.e. one and three and optional two and/or four where present) being 100%; and where the mixture used in step (a) is substantially free of volatile amines and N-alkyl pyrrolidinones; (b) adding to the reaction mixture from step (a) an alkali metal neutralising agent in an amount from 0.05 to 6 parts by weight substantially to neutralise the isocyanate terminated prepolymer obtained from step (a); where the amount (in weight parts) of the alkali metal neutralising agent is calculated based on the weight of alkali metal in the neutralising agent relative to the total amount of components one to four in step (a) being equal to 100 parts; and (c) reacting the neutralised prepolymer from step (b) with an active hydrogen compound to extend the chain of the prepolymer to form an aqueous dispersion of polyurethane A. and (ii) 90 to 5% by weight of a vinyl polymer B wherein the weight % amounts of (i) and (ii) are calculated as a percentage of the total amount of (i) and (ii) and these percentages add up to 100%; and where the composition is: substantially free of volatile amines and N-alkyl pyrrolidinones (preferably solvent free); and is neutralised with a metal neutralising agent and the composition comprises a polyamine of polyhydrazide compound. Another aspect of the invention provides an aqueous coating obtained from the above process, in which polyurethane A and/or vinyl polymer B is Schiff base cross-linkable under ambient conditions.
