In its essentially pure form it has the characteristics of a molecular weight of from about 100,000 to 2,000,000 Daltons; emulsifying activity which increases with preheating at increasing temperatures--60.degree.-90.degree. C.; resistance to strong alkali while retaining increased emulsifying activity; reduced viscosity that varies as a function of temperature treatment; and emulsifying activity that varies as a function of pH and magnesium ions.

More specifically, the invention relates to the preparation and use of a bacteriophage conjugated through a labile/non labile linker or directly to at least 1,000 therapeutic drug molecules such that the drug molecules are conjugated to the outer surface of the bacteriophage. The bacteriophage optionally displays on its coat a ligand that endows it with specificity towards target cells. Thus, there is provided a targeted, high-capacity drug delivery system useful for the treatment of various pathological conditions.

The present invention relates to a live vaccine for the vaccination of poultry and mammals against a variety of gram negative pathogens belonging to Enterobacteriaceae, comprising a bacterial deletion mutant derived from a non-pathogenic strain of E. coli; to a process for obtaining bacterial mutant strain for use in a live vaccine according to claim 1, which comprises exposing a non-pathogenic strain of E. coli to a mutation inducing agent and selecting strains devoid of O-antigens, and cultivating same to obtain the bacteria for use in such live vaccine; to the novel mutant strain E. coli LR-2, and to a process for immunizing poultry and mammals against Enterobacteriaceae which comprises applying to the avian or to the mammal an effective dose of such a vaccine by oral route or as aerosol.

A method and system for detecting a parameter of a host cell, a cell culture or medium is provided. A host cell is transfected with an expressible DNA sequence which is under expression control of an inducible promoter sequence. The promoter sequence is inducible in correlation with the parameter, the expressible sequence encoding an enzymatically active product which can catalyze a reaction giving rise to an electrical signal which is detectable in an electrochemical measurement. An electrical signal determined in an electrochemical system then serves as an indication for the parameter.
