This invention further relates to the process for preparing the N,N'-bis(4-isocyanatocyclohexyl)urea and to its use in the synthesis of polyurethanes.

Low molecular weight 4,4'-diphenylmethane-uretdione-diisocyanates corresponding to the formula: ##STR1## wherein n is a number from 0 to 1,are made by dimerizing diphenylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate at a temperature of 50.degree. C. or less in a mixture of non-polar and moderately polar solvents in the presence of a dimerization catalyst. The dimerization product may then be worked up at low temperatures (i.e., .ltoreq.50.degree. C.). The dimerization products of diphenylmethane-diisocyanate thus obtained generally have only a small amount of oligomeric uretdione-diisocyanates present. These dimerization products may be used advantageously in the synthesis of polyurethanes.

Diisocyanates corresponding to the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 (an isocyanate-containing radical) are as defined herein are made by several processes. These diisocyanates may be made by phosgenating the diamine in which the diisocyanate is based. They may also be produced by treating the bis-urethane of the tertiary alcohol corresponding to the diisocyanate with phosgene. Such diisocyanates may also be made by treating a specific type of bis-urea with hydrogen chloride. The diisocyanates corresponding to the above-given formula are particularly useful in the production of polyurethanes having good flame-proof and mechanical properties.

The present invention relates to the preparation of powdered heat-curable reaction mixtures in which melt suspension of (a) solid polyisocyanates having melting points above about 60.degree. C., (b) molten high molecular weight isocyanate-reactive compounds having molecular weights of from 400 to 10,000 that have melting or softening points of 50.degree. C. to 150.degree. C., and (c) optionally, solid or liquid low molecular weight chain-extending or crosslinking compounds having molecular weights of from 62 to 399, are added to an inert solvent containing an emulsifier, thereby forming powdered heat-curable reaction mixtures in which components (a), (b), and (c) remain in uncrossedlinked form. The invention further relates to the use of the heat-curing reaction mixtures for the preparation of high-quality polyurethane polyurea plastics.

The present invention relates to a process for the production of storable thermosetting polyurethane-polyurea compositions wherein a storable isocyanate component stabilized by a surface coating and a polyol and/or polyamine component are separately prepared. A one-component polyurethane-polyurea reactive mixture is formed by mixing just before the intended use the separate components under mild shear forces at a temperature below the thickening temperature of the final reactive mixture.
