The sensor membrane of an optical sensor for detection of O.sub.2, H.sub.2 O.sub.2, SO.sub.2 or halogenated hydrocarbons in a sample contains an indicator substance that is homogeneously immobilized in the polymer matrix of the sensor membrane and is, at least indirectly, in contact with the sample, changing at least one of its optical properties upon a change of the parameter to be measured. The indicator substance contains an inorganic salt of a transition metal complex with .alpha.-diimine ligands. The indicator substance is homogeneously distributed in the polymer matrix, which essentially consists of at least one substance belonging to the group of cellulose derivatives, polystyrenes, polytetrahydrofuranes, or their respective derivatives.

In order to reduce the measuring volume in a device for measuring chemical and physical parameters of liquid or gaseous media by means of optical sensor elements whose optodes may be replaced easily, a measuring unit with a sample channel is provided which may be inserted into a supporting frame of the device and which may be connected to ingoing and outgoing sample lines via capillary bores. The measuring unit contains a sensor carrier forming the boundary of the sample channel on one side, which sensor carrier has bores holding the optodes. The indicator film of each individual optode is situated in the plane of the sensor carrier facing the sample channel.

In order to obtain accurate measurements in a simple manner the proposal is put forward that for measuring purposes a storage medium in the measuring channel be replaced by a separating medium which should then be replaced by the sample. Sample and storage medium will remain in the measuring element when it is discarded.

A method, a sensor and apparatus for detecting biological activities in a specimen, for example in a blood sample, are provided in which a sealable container is sealed with a culture medium therein into which the sample is introduced, metabolic processes are enhanced in the presence of microorganisms in the sample and changes taking place in the concentrations of the substances. Such processes are detected and monitored with an excitation and detection assembly assigned to concentration sensors, in the form of optodes which are optically coupled to the excitation and detection assembly and to thereby to an evaluation unit for determining concentration changes of the substances over time as indications of the presence of microorganisms.
