System and method for controlling a continuously variable transmission having a pair of variable-diameter pulleys disposed on input and output shafts, and a corresponding pair of hydraulic cylinders to change effective diameters of the pulleys. A speed ratio control valve assembly is used to control flows of a fluid to and from one of the cylinders. The control valve assembly is selectively placed in one of three states consisting of a first state for feeding the fluid to the one cylinder, a second state for discharging the fluid from the one cylinder, and a third state for restricting the flow to or from the one cylinder. The first and third states are alternately established while a ratio of an operating time in the first state to that in the third state is changed, for controlling a rate of flow of the fluid into the one cylinder, and the second and third states are alternately established while a ratio of operating time in the second state to that in the third state is changed, for controlling a rate of flow of the fluid from the one cylinder, whereby the speed ratio of the transmission is continuously varied by the one cylinder under control of the speed-ratio control valve assembly.

A method for controlling an engine using a continuously variable transmission, the method decreases the fuel consumption of the engine in a transient shifting condition. When the operator displaces the accelerator means and the magnitude of the difference between a steady state engine speed, which corresponds to the amount the throttle means of the engine is opened, and a previously detected engine speed differs from a predetermined constant value, the engine speed abruptly increases after a predetermined time elapses and thereafter the engine speed gradually changes to the steady state engine speed. The abrupt increases in the engine speed is a function of a vehicle speed and the amount of the throttle opening.

A method is provided for controlling an engine using a continuously variable transmission whereby the fuel consumption of the engine is decreased. When an accelerator of the engine is displaced, first and second desired engine speeds are determined for steady state conditions before and after the displacement of the accelerator, respectively. The difference between the two desired engine speeds is calculated and compared with a predetermined value. If the difference between the desired engine speeds is smaller than the predetermined value, the actual engine speed is adjusted to gradually approach the second desired engine speed. If the difference between the two desired engine speeds is larger than the predetermined value, the actual engine speed is immediately adjusted to a transient value and is then adjusted to approach the new desired engine speed gradually.

A simulation apparatus simulates, using a system model, the dynamic performance of a target apparatus to be simulated, which includes a driving source and is constructed by a plurality of units for transmitting the driving force output from the driving source, and expresses the target apparatus by functional and data models. The functional model expresses each of units that construct the target apparatus by exchange of energy by the dynamic performance of that unit, and a parameter which determines that dynamic performance. The parameter for each unit is computed using static characteristic data read out from a memory, thus expressing each unit as a data model.
