A wheel bearing includes a sealing device 5 positioned between inner and outer members 1 and 2. This sealing device 5 includes an elastic member 14, which eventually forms an encoder grid and is provided on a first annular sealing plate 11. An engagement 18 between a cylindrical wall 11a of the first annular sealing plate 11 and the inner member 1 is provided with an elastic member 20 made of a material dissimilar to that for the elastic material 14. This elastic member 20 may be a rubber coated layer, resin paint layer, a thin film of adhesive material or a ring-shaped rubber member. Thereby, any possible ingress of water across an engagement surface of the annular sealing plate is prevented, accompanied by increase of the lifetime of the bearing, with no problem associated with separation and displacement of the annular sealing plates. A reliable brake rotor and wheel bearing assembly are proposed which make unnecessary adjustment of runout of brake rotor at the customer's factory. For runout of each of the mounting surface and back of the brake rotor itself, and runout of the side of the wheel mounting flange of the inner member to which is mounted the brake rotor, the maximum difference between the peaks of crests and troughs in each period of surface runout is restricted within a standard value, and the brake rotor is mounted to the wheel mounting flange, thereby eliminating the necessity of mounting of the brake rotor and adjustment of runout after mounting at the customer's factory to provide a reliable automotive wheel bearing assembly.

A wheel bearing assembly is provided which has a rotating speed sensor unit which includes a seal for preventing entry of foreign matter and which takes up little space and thus can be mounted on the wheel bearing assembly without increasing the axial dimension of the fixed member of the wheel bearing assembly. The assembly includes a fixed member fixed to a vehicle body, and a rotary member rotatably supported in the stationary member through a bearing and mounted to a vehicle wheel. An annular sensor is fitted to a knuckle, which is a part of the fixed member, on the inboard side of the bearing. A sensor seal is fitted to the annular sensor and has a seal lip kept in slide contact with a seal land formed on a constant-velocity joint outer ring, which is a part of the rotary member, to define a sealed space on the inboard side of the bearing. An encoder is mounted on a bearing inner ring, which is a part of the rotary member, in the sealed space. The sensor element is disposed in the sealed space, opposite the encoder.

During the manufacturing, a swaged portion is formed in a manner as a non-hardened region, and in a manner that variations based on a reference surface in the axial direction of the flat surface are restricted within +/−0.2 mm. The reference surface is provided with an end face on an outboard side of a flange for an attachment of a wheel or an end face on an inboard side of the flange for attachment to a vehicle body. Part of the swaged portion making contact with an outer joint member of to drive wheel bearing device is formed into a flat surface. Serrations and a pilot part are formed on an inner periphery of a first inner member of the drive wheel bearing device. An inner peripheral surface of the pilot part is formed as a turned surface, and the turned surface has been turned after forming the swaged portion. A serrated shaft is formed on the outer joint member for transmitting torque to and from the first inner member through the serrations and an outer periphery surface opposing to the pilot part. A surface hardened layer is formed on the outer joint member by heat treatment in a region that includes at least the serrated shaft.
