A process for producing porous polymer beads in which polymers, preferably polyolefins or polyvinyl chloride, are dissolved in a solvent, preferably halogenated hydrocarbons or alkyl esters, at temperatures close to the boiling point of the solvent. The hot polymer solution is cooled, and the polymer beads formed during the cooling process are separated, washed and dried. The porous polymer beads are useful, for example, as catalyst carriers or as adsorption agents.

The aluminum oxide consists of either the "gamma" or the "kappa" modification and has no "delta" modification, or it consists of the "kappa" and "theta" modifications and has no "alpha" modification. Carrier catalysts which contain catalytically active metals and/or metal compounds on the abrasion-resistant carrier are especially suitable for use in fluidized bed processes.

A process for the preparation of shaped bodies includes preparing a plastic mixture of a material selected from the group consisting of aluminum oxides, aluminum hydroxides, silicon oxides, silicon hydroxides and mixtures thereof from a predominantly dry component K1 in powdered form and a paste component K2 comprising water and additional additives, continuously extruding the plastic mixture into cut lengths, shaping the cut lengths into spherical shaped bodies and drying the spherical shaped bodies and optionally tempering such bodies to form catalyst and catalyst supports. The solids content of the powdered component K1 is from 65 to 100% by weight whereas the solids content of the paste component K2 is 10 to 50% by weight. Preferable spherical shaped bodies are based on Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, SiO.sub.2, or Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 /SiO.sub.2.

Also described are spherical particles made from inorganic oxides with a narrow pore diameter distribution and a high resistance to wear which are suitable for use as catalysts, catalyst supports, adsorbents drying agents or ion exchange materials.

The description relates to an abrasion-resistant carrier catalyst for removing the nitrite and/or nitrate content of polluted water with selective nitrogen formation. The catalytically active metal component is palladium and/or rhodium or palladium and a metal from the copper group. The carrier consists of aluminum oxide in the "theta" and "kappa" modification and has either one maximum pore diameter in the 70 to 150 nm (700 to 1500 .ANG.) range or two maxima in the 10 to 150 nm (100 to 1500 .ANG.) range. The description also relates to a continuously operable process for the removal or reduction of the oxygen, nitrite and/or nitrate content of water by catalytic hydrogenation. The process is implemented using the novel carrier catalysts, the carriers being made of aluminum oxide of the theta and kappa modifications. Contamination of the catalyst is effectively prevented by the preferred use according to the fluidized bed process.
