The shaped alumina produced having a loose bulk density of greater than or equal to 1.20 g/ml, a surface area less than 10 m2/g, impurities of less than 5 ppm of individual metals and less than 9 ppm of impurities in total, and/or crush strength of greater than 12,000 psi.

The disclosure relates to methods for making a ceramic or glass-ceramic, the methods comprising spray-drying a mixture comprising batch materials to form agglomerated particles; bringing the agglomerated particles into contact with a plasma for a residence time sufficient to form fused particles; and annealing the fused particles at a temperature and for a time sufficient to form ceramic or glass-ceramic particles. A continuous process and apparatus for the production of at least approximately spherical, substantially solid particles, in which the particles are granulated in a circulating fluidized bed. This can be achieved by spraying a suspension or a solution of the solid which forms the particles into a chamber. A drying gas is passed through the chamber at a velocity which is sufficient to effect pneumatic conveying of already partially dried or agglomerated particles. The particles conveyed by the drying gas stream are separated from the exhaust gas stream and returned, at least in part, to the chamber. Particles with a size within the desired particle size range are continuously discharged from the chamber, such that the mass present in the chamber remains constant.

A process for the preparation of shaped bodies includes preparing a plastic mixture of a material selected from the group consisting of aluminum oxides, aluminum hydroxides, silicon oxides, silicon hydroxides and mixtures thereof from a predominantly dry component K1 in powdered form and a paste component K2 comprising water and additional additives, continuously extruding the plastic mixture into cut lengths, shaping the cut lengths into spherical shaped bodies and drying the spherical shaped bodies and optionally tempering such bodies to form catalyst and catalyst supports. The solids content of the powdered component K1 is from 65 to 100% by weight whereas the solids content of the paste component K2 is 10 to 50% by weight. Preferable spherical shaped bodies are based on Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, SiO.sub.2, or Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 /SiO.sub.2.

Highly active aluminum oxide characterized by a severely disturbed crystalline structure of .chi.-(chi-)aluminum oxide, a specific surface area of about 260 to 400 m.sup.2 /g according to BET, a residual water content of 2 to 10 % and a water absorption capacity at 50 % relative atmospheric humidity of more than 15 %, and process of producing same by heating aluminum hydroxide to a temperature of 350.degree. to 800.degree.C with a residence time of from 0.1 to 2 seconds in a zone of high turbulence in a hot gas which enters said zone at a temperature of about 500.degree. to 1200.degree.C at an inflow rate of 30 to 150 m/second. These highly active aluminum oxide may be formed into beads by grinding said aluminum oxide to a specified particle size and forming the aluminum oxide under addition of water.
