A method for forming a metal coating on an elongated member, specifically, for forming a thick metal coating on a wire or the like, in which an elongated member being drawn through a melt is extracted from the surface of the bath in a gas container. The gas container is supplied with a nonoxidiziing gas, liquid or a mixture. Preferably, the gas, liquid or mixture is supplied at a temperature sufficiently low to prevent oxidation of the surface of the melt and to cool the elongated member rapidly. The bath should contain a structure for causing the gas, liquid or mixture supply thereto to swirl around the elongated member.

A heat-resistant galvanized iron alloy wire is disclosed. The wire is comprised of an iron alloy wire core which may be an Fe-Ni type alloy. The core is coated on its periphery with a Zn-Al alloy. The alloy is comprised of 0.2 to 1.0 wt % Al with the balance being Zn, provided that Pb is present in an amount of less than 0.05 wt % and Sb is present in an amount of less than 0.02 wt %. The Zn-Al alloy may contain small amounts of typical impurities or compounds included in order to prevent the oxidation of the Zn or Al. The resulting wire has excellent heat-resistant properties.

When an oxide superconducting thin film is formed on a substrate by a vapor phase method such as laser ablation, for example, a plurality of grooves are formed on the substrate by photolithography or beam application in the same direction with an average groove-to-groove pitch of not more than 10 .mu.m, so that the oxide superconducting thin film is formed on a surface provided with such a plurality of grooves. Thus promoted is growth of crystals of the oxide superconducting thin film in parallel with the grooves, whereby respective directions of a-axes and c-axes are regulated to some extent. This improves critical current density of the oxide superconducting thin film.

There is provided an oscillator using a high-frequency crystal resonator which can satisfy the drive level needed for the crystal resonator and expand a variable frequency range. An oscillator having an oscillation circuit CC for oscillating the resonator SS is provided with a limiter circuit LM1 as a load of the resonator SS which is inductive and is a load circuit for limiting an oscillation amplitude. According to this configuration, the action of the limiter circuit LM1 allows satisfaction of the drive level needed for the crystal resonator and expansion of the variable frequency range.

The bypass exhaust passage bypasses the main exhaust passage between a branch point of the bypass exhaust passage out of the main exhaust passage and a junction with the main exhaust passage at a upstream side of the main catalytic converter. A first sensor indicates a first air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas in the bypass exhaust passage. A second sensor indicates a second air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas flowing into the main catalytic converter. A controller determines whether the valve in the closed configuration leaks exhaust gas based on the first and second air-fuel ratios of exhaust gas.
