An optical amplifier including a pumping optical source, a plurality of erbium doped optical fibers for amplifying optical signals of a plurality of wavelengths using pumping light generated by the pumping optical source, and a plurality of gratings alternately connected to the optical fibers, for reflecting an optical signal of a specific wavelength among different wavelength optical signals amplified by the optical fibers, wherein when optical signals for channels have different powers, the optical signal power for each individual channel is equalized by amplifying and reflecting the optical signals at different positions with different amplification gains. Accordingly, in a system having a great loss such as long-distance transmission, optical signals of different wavelengths are reflected at different positions, and amplified by a gain medium, thus making power equalization possible.

An optical modulator using an isolator, and an optical transmitter including the same are provided. The optical modulator modulates a carrier wave generated by an optical source according to a predetermined electrical signal. An isolator in the modulator includes a Faraday rotator in which the rotation angle of polarization is different according to the intensity of an applied magnetic field. The rotator controls isolation of an optical signal according to the polarization rotation angle and outputs a modulated optical signal. A magnetic field generator produces a magnetic field whose intensity is controlled by a predetermined electrical signal, and applies the produced magnetic field to the isolator. A signal generator supplies the electrical signal to the magnetic field generator and controls the intensity of the electrical signal. The magnetic field generator is mounted on the optical isolator, and the electric signal applied to the magnetic field generator is adjusted to control the intensity of the magnetic field formed in the isolator. Accordingly, isolation of an optical signal is activated or deactivated, thereby modulating a continuous wave optical signal. Thus, a small and cheap optical modulator having an excellent temperature property can be realized and easily housed in the transmitter.

An optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM) for adding and dropping wavelength groups for each node among multiplexed and input wavelength groups includes: a wavelength group demultiplexer for separating a plurality of input channels into groups of channels and dropping a channel group required for the node and passing the other groups of channels therethrough; a channel selector for selecting channels from the wavelength group output from the wavelength group demultiplexer and transmitting the selected channels to the area; a channel multiplexer for multiplexing the channels having the same wavelengths as those of the selected channels and input from the area into the wavelength group, and a wavelength group multiplexer for adding the wavelength group input from the channel multiplexer to the wavelength groups that have passed through the wavelength group demultiplexer. Wavelengths required for each node are set to a wavelength group, thereby reducing the time necessary in extending channel capacity or wavelengths in each node. Also, since only a channel selector is additionally installed in an OADM for wavelength extension, wavelength extension is facilitated and a WDM system can be constructed at a low cost. Such an OADM may be used in a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical link.
