Rotational power is output from the fluid torque converter to the power input member of the first gear transmission mechanism. A governor valve for a hydraulic controller in an automatic transmission, which is disclosed herein, comprises an adapter having a line pressure supply bore made therethrough, a cylindrical governor rotary shaft loosely fitted into the adapter sleeve and having a line pressure supply port made therein, the port including notches intersecting the axis at right angles, a centrifugal weight mounted on one end of the governor rotary shaft and having a return spring, and a spool adapted to slide within the governor rotary shaft with the weight being urged against one end thereof. In this governor valve, there are provided dirt and dust collecting means for preventing dirt and dust separated by a centrifugal action from collecting in the line pressure supply port during the stoppage of the governor rotary shaft so as to make the shaft stick.

The axial distance between the general axial position of the edges of the stator vanes which define the stator inlet and the axial position of the edge of the stator inner shell in the direction of the stator inlet is substantially greater than zero, and the stator vanes which define the stator inlet extend more towards the direction of the turbine outlet than does the edge of the stator inner shell in the direction of the stator inlet.

Thereby a common type of transaxle casing may be used both for an automatic transmission assembly which incorporates such an overdrive mechanism and for an automatic transmission assembly which does not incorporate such an overdrive mechanism, and in the latter case no waste of space within the transaxle casing due to the unnecessary provision of space for the second hydraulic fluid accumulator need occur.

The direct coupling clutch comprises; a first clutch element connected to an input shaft or an output shaft; a first circular coupling element engaging a second clutch element disposed in an opposing relation to the first clutch element, in a manner to effect the relative movement to the second clutch element in the axial direction alone thereof; second and third circular coupling elements coupled to each other at a spacing from each other, with the first circular coupling element interposed therebetween, and adapted to rotate relative to the first circular coupling element through a given angle; and compression coil springs retained in the first circular coupling element and engaging the second and third circular coupling elements, thereby absorbing shock due to the relative rotation of the first circular coupling element to the second and third circular coupling elements; the compression coil springs having a surface hardness nearly equal to the surface hardness of the compression-coil-spring retaining portions of the first circular element and the engaging portions of the second and third circular elements.
