A water redispersible polymer powder is produced by drying an aqueous mixture of a high Tg carboxylated styrene butadiene polymer and a low Tg carboxylated styrene butadiene polymer, where the ratio of the mean or average particle size of the high Tg polymer to the particle size of the low Tg polymer is from 1:1 to 5:1, preferably from 1:1 to 3:1, and the amount of the high Tg polymer is from 20 wt. % to 35 wt. %, preferably from 25 wt. % to 30 wt. %, based upon the total weight of the high Tg polymer and the low Tg polymer. Cement compositions such as mortars, which contain the redispersible polymer powder exhibit unexpectedly superior high bond strength and high impact resistance.

The alkyl modified polyvinyl alcohol provides excellent redispersibility of the redispersible polymer powder without adversely affecting spray drying. Cement compositions such as mortars, which contain the redispersible polymer powder with the alkyl modified polyvinyl alcohol exhibit unexpectedly superior stability and an unexpectedly lower rate of mortar viscosity buildup which is advantageous for workability or troweling.

The present invention provides compositions comprising redispersible polymer powders of polyolefins with carboxyl group containing dispersant polymers and vinyl ester copolymers which may further comprise hydraulic or water curable inorganic cements for various construction applications, such as cement tile adhesives. Methods of making redispersible polymer powders of polyolefins are also provided, including forming an aqueous polyolefin dispersion, such as, for example, by mechanical dispersion, followed by drying to form the redispersible polymer powders.

The invention concerns redispersible polymer powders which can be used in a variety of ways, for example, in hydraulically binding systems, but also as binder in greatly varied applications and which can be produced by spray-drying of aqueous dispersions. The sprayable aqueous dispersions are prepared by mixing an aqueous polymer dispersion 1 (containing polymer I) with an aqueous polymer dispersion 2 (containing polymer II) where the diameters of the particles of polymer I are greater by a factor of 5 to 150, preferably 15 to 50, than the diameter of the particles of polymer II, and polymer I is a polymer which forms films at room temperature, while polymer II has a glass transition temperature which is higher than that of polymer I, is insoluble in water and thus it is present in the undissolved form in the aqueous dispersion to be sprayed. The polymer powders according to the invention excel by a clearly improved resistance to blocking and very good storage stability.
