摘要: Apparatus for selecting a block of data in a previous frame to be used as a predicted block for a given block in a current frame in a system that reduces the bit rate by codifying the difference between the predicted block and the given block in a given manner by deriving the differences between the given block in the current frame and a plurality of blocks in the previous frame and selecting as the predicted block that block for which the codification of its differences with the given block requires the least number of bits. The apparatus can also select a predicted block from a number of blocks selected in accordance with ABD or SBD techniques.

摘要: A video signal encoder uses an encoding system such as that developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). A key component of this encoding system increases the quantization step size of image data, thus decreasing its quantization resolution, to reduce the number of bits used to encode the data. Apparatus according to the present invention, monitors the color information being encoded and inhibits or reduces any increase in quantization step size for the luminance component and the color component of the image when signals representing saturated or nearly saturated red image components are being encoded.

摘要: A digital television processing section capable of picture enhancement, progressive scanning, and multiple picture-in-picture processing is provided. The preferred digital television processing section preferably comprises a picture enhancement processor (PEP), a progressive scan processor, a picture in picture processor, at least one multiplexing means, and a common memory means. The PEP broadly comprises a parameter control means, a memory input select means, and mixer for obtaining current video data, delayed video data from the common memory, and control information from the control means, and for processing the obtained data and information to provide a signal to the progressive scan processor. In various modes of operation, the mixer also provides the signal to the memory input select means which forwards the information to the common memory. The common memory is used as a field delay device and feeds a delayed signal forward to the progressive scan processor. The progressive scan processor then utilizes the current signal and the delayed signal to provide a non-interlaced display. The delayed signal from the common memory may also be fed back to the mixer of the PEP so that noise reduction and/or cross-color effect reduction may be accomplished or so that stored pictures may be displayed. The picture-in-picture (PIP) processor together with a first multiplexer permits main and secondary (PIP) video data to be supplied as current video data to the PEP. Or if desired, up to nine PIPs may constitute the video field.

摘要: A system and method for filtering a digital signal having a relatively high data rate uses circuitry which operates at a lower data rate. The filter includes an input section which receives the input signal and which divides the input signal into a plurality of contiguous segments. The system also includes a first filter which receives samples representing one of the plurality of segments and adjacent samples from the next contiguous one of the segments and which filters all of the received samples to produce a first filtered signal. A second filter receives samples of the next contiguous segment and filters those samples to produce a second filtered signal. The filtered signals are combined by providing the samples of the second filtered signal immediately after the samples of the first filtered signal to produce a filtered output signal. The invention also relates to using respective timing signals associated with the segments to determine when the samples of the first and second filtered signals are provided.

摘要: A system and method for providing a video signal during the delay time between when a new channel is selected and when the digital picture is acquired and displayed is disclosed. In particular, the system provides an NTSC-like analog video signal along with a conventional digital television signal such that when a user initially makes a new channel selection, the analog video signal, which can be quickly and easily decoded, is presented for display until the digital television signal is completely decoded and acquired. As soon as the digital television signal is ready for display, the displayed signal switches from the analog video signal to the digital television signal. For purposes of conserving frequency spectrum, the analog video signal is a simple NTSC-like monochrome (i.e., black and white) signal and limited to a 1 MHz band of the available 6 MHz spectrum allocated for each channel.

摘要: A T.V. input source identifying circuit for determining whether a video signal is from a videotape player or a broadcast signal by measuring jitter of vertical synchronization pulses and by measuring noise. The video signal includes a plurality of frames with each frame including a plurality of fields. In one embodiment of the present invention, timing data is generated corresponding to the period of at least one selected field in each of a plurality of selected frames. From this timing data, a maximum number is stored that corresponds to the greatest period and a minimum number is stored that corresponds to the least period of the selected fields. The minimum number is subtracted from the maximum number and the difference is compared to a threshold to determine the type of video signal. In an alternate embodiment, numbers corresponding to fields from successive frames are compared by a subtraction and the difference is compared to a threshold in order to make a decision as to the type of video signal. In both of the aforementioned embodiments, the noise level of the video signal is constantly monitored. When the noise is above a threshold, the local signal is generated regardless of the information derived from the timing data.

摘要: When the second channel in a picture-in-picture (PIP) receiver is turned off by the user, it is automatically tuned to the station selected for the first channel. Both channels thus process a signal having the same picture information. After partial processing, the two signals are averaged, creating a signal which has the same picture signal components but substantially reduced noise components. This reduced noise signal is then subjected to the remaining standard processing in the first channel and applied to the picture tube.

摘要: An apparatus or transforming the resolution of an image from a first image resolution to a second image resolution using operations in the spatial frequency domain. The apparatus converts the bit-stream format which defines the first image and can be used to, for example, change the resolution of an MPEG encoded video signal by converting the MPED bitstream. The apparatus generates converted macroblocks from original macroblocks. During conversion, the apparatus determines whether the converted macroblock is (1) intra or non-intra coded, (2) P-coded or B-coded, and (3) in field format or frame format. The apparatus may also include the selection of a motion vector for the converted macroblock from the original macroblocks. Further, the apparatus may also map a first group of transform values which represent the image at the first image resolution to a second group of transform values which represent the image the second image resolution in the spatial frequency domain.

摘要: An apparatus and method, applicable to variable bit rate video and constant bit rate video, is disclosed for replacing "stuffing bytes" with private data. The invention takes advantage of the otherwise wasted resources dedicated to "stuffing" in a data stream in order to insert private data. This is accomplished by inserting useful private data in a Transport Stream instead of the stuffing bits. That is, effectively, a re-multiplexing operation occurs where, based on the existence of certain conditions in a Transport Packet (e.g., stuffing bytes exist), the information necessary to replace stuffing bytes with private data yet still comply with established standards is accomplished. This data generally is referred to as privatestuff data in order to distinguish it from typical private data which may otherwise be encoded into a Transport Stream. The stuffing bytes removed from the Transport Packet may come from an adaptation field in the Transport Header or directly from the Transport Payload or both.
