摘要： This specification discloses a method of recording information on a recording medium which has the relative scanning of the recording medium by a probe for information recording, the relative scanning being effected along the surface of the recording medium, the recording medium being capable of forming two or more kinds of state changes relative to the state of non-recording, and a recording process onto the recording medium through the probe effecting the relative scanning, the recording process being carried out by intermittently forming bits on the recording medium, each of the bits being formed with one of the two or more kinds of state changes in conformity with recording information. The specification also discloses a method of reproducing information recorded on a recording medium by such information recording method. The specification further discloses an apparatus for carrying out the information recording method, and an apparatus for carrying out the information reproducing method.

摘要： A probe closely positioned to an information carrier in apparatus to effect information reading and/or input on the information carrier is formed by opposing an electrode to an end portion of the probe to be formed. The distance between probe end portion and the electrode is detected to control the position of the electrode with respect to the probe. A voltage is applied to the probe end portion through the electrode under positioning control to form the probe end portion. The probe end portion is formed and may be reformed to maintain reliable performance of the information reading and/or input apparatus.

Also disclosed is an information recording and/or reproducing apparatus for recording information on and/or reproducing information from an information recording medium while relatively scanning the information recording medium by a probe, which includes an abnormality detection device for detecting abnormality of the probe according to a result of a detection by the probe of a predetermined information region separated from a region where the information is recorded and/or reproduced on the information recording medium.

A plurality of probes are arranged in the apparatus so as to face a medium which carries an information, Each of the plurality of probes produces a detection signal from the medium. A performance testing device is provided in the apparatus for testing the performance of each of the plurality of probes. A detection device in the apparatus selects the signal from at least one normal probe on the basis of the test result of the testing device and detects the information in accordance with the selected signal. By such the construction in the apparatus, the detection of the information can be continuously effected even if one of the probes is broken.

By forming a cantilever of the first stage by extending the insulation layer laminated on the substrate, providing a lalyer structure having a piezoelectric material sandwiched between the electrode members on the cantilever of the first stage, forming further a cantilever of the second stage on the extension from the tip end of the first cantilever having said layer structure and also forming an information detection probe at the free end of the cantilever of said second stage, and utilizing the reverse piezoelectric effect formed by application of a voltage between the electrodes of said layer structure, the cantilever of the above first stage is displaced.
