摘要: A medical device with an articulating shaft assembly includes at least one slat member which has a cross section that allows it to be substantially flexible in a first plane and relatively stiff in the plane perpendicular to the first plane. A bendable section located at the working end of the device includes at least a portion of one or more slat members, such that the bendable section will articulate in the first plane in response to tensive and/or compressive forces applied to the bendable section. The device also includes a shaft section which is coupled to and supports the bendable section, and at least one control mechanism arranged to cause the tensive and/or compressive forces needed to articulate the bendable section to be applied to the bendable section.

摘要: A shape-changing anatomical anchor includes an activation means arranged to convert the anchor from a de-activated state to an activated state, and one or more members which extend away from the activation means and thereby change the shape of the anchor when the anchor is activated. The anchor is installed within bone and/or soft tissue when de-activated; when activated, the shape change acts to increase the force with which the anchor is retained within the tissue in which it is installed. Both piloted and non-piloted versions are described.

摘要: A method and apparatus for containing heat generated by a battery to reduce the amplitude of a temperature excursion to enhance safety in temperature critical applications, such as in implantable medical devices. The apparatus employs a heat absorber closely thermally coupled to the battery. The heat absorber includes heat absorbing material preferably exhibiting an endothermic phase change at a temperature T1 below that produced by the battery.

摘要: A facet joint replacement system includes an inferior implant with an inferior articular surface, and a superior implant with a superior articular surface. The inferior implant may comprise an inferior strut, and a polyaxially adjustable, lockable mechanism which couples the inferior articular surface with a first end of the inferior strut. A second end of the inferior strut may be secured to a polyaxially adjustable, lockable fixation assembly securable in a vertebra. The first end of the inferior strut may be post-shaped, and the second end ring-shaped, and vice versa. The superior implant may be secured to a polyaxially adjustable lockable fixation assembly securable in a vertebra. Inferior and superior implants may be implanted individually, paired on one lateral vertebral side, bi-laterally, and/or in multiple vertebral levels. A crosslink may be secured to one implant and extend across a vertebral sagittal plane to a second implant. A clip may align the articular surfaces during implantation.

摘要: An electric storage battery and method of manufacture thereof characterized by a feedthrough pin which is internally directly physically and electrically connected to an inner end of a positive electrode substrate. A C-shaped mandrel extends around the pin and substrate end enabling the pin/mandrel to be used during the manufacturing process as an arbor to facilitate winding layers of a spiral jellyroll electrode assembly. The pin additionally extends from the battery case and in the final product constitutes one of the battery terminals with the battery case comprising the other terminal. Active material is removed from both sides of the outer end of the negative electrode in the jellyroll to allow room for adhesive tape to secure the jellyroll. The electrolyte is injected through the open end of the case after the endcap is welded to the negative electrode but before sealing the endcap to the case. The electrolyte is preferably injected through the C-shaped mandrel to facilitate and speed filling.
