A process for making a product containing tin (II) carboxylates of the formula (RCOO)2−n(OOCR′)n, where each R, which may be the same or different, is hydrogen or a C1-C40 hydrocarbyl group, each R′, which may be the same or different, is a C1-C40 hydrocarbyl group, and n is 0, 1, or 2 the process comprising: (a) forming a reaction mixture by combining elemental tin, a promoter, and one or more carboxylate-containing compounds of the formula R(CO)X, where R is hydrogen or a C1-C40 hydrocarbyl group and X is a hydroxyl group, a halogen atom, or O(CO)R′, where R′ is a C1-C40 hydrocarbyl group; (b) heating the reaction mixture to form heated reaction mixture; (c) oxidizing the heated reaction mixture using an oxygen-containing gas to form an oxidized reaction mixture containing tin (II) carboxylates as well as tin (IV) carboxylates; and (d) reducing the oxidized reaction mixture with elemental tin to convert at least a portion of the tin (IV) carboxylates to tin (II) carboxylates to form the product containing tin (II) carboxylates.

An overbased mixture of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylates salts useful in making low-fogging thermal stabilizers for PVC is made by reacting zinc oxide with fatty acid and such as stearic acid, then adding aromatic acids, and then adding and reacting one or both of magnesium oxide and calcium oxide, under controlled heating conditions to maintain fluidity while minimizing side reactions, and then conditioning the reaction product to remove volatiles.

Stabilizer compositions for rigid polyvinyl chloride resin compositions are provided comprising an antimony mercaptocarboxylic acid or ester and a mercaptocarboxylic acid ester in amounts within the range from about 90 to about 25 parts antimony mercaptocarboxylic acid or ester and from about 10 to about 75 parts mercaptocarboxylic acid ester; the amount of mercaptocarboxylic acid ester being selected within these ranges to synergize the stabilizing effectiveness of the antimony mercaptocarboxylic acid or ester.Rigid polyvinyl chloride resin compositions also are provided having their resistance to the development of early discoloration enhanced by a stabilizing amount of the antimony mercaptocarboxylic acid or ester and mercaptocarboxylic acid ester, the synergistic effect being particularly evidenced in rigid polyvinyl chloride resin compositions containing both an ortho-dihydric phenol and an alkaline earth metal carboxylate, such as catechol and calcium stearate.

Homogeneous liquid stabilizer systems imparting to polyvinyl chloride resins a heat and light stability comparable to or exceeding organotin stabilizers are provided which are substantially solvent-free and have a low viscosity and a minimum flash point of 96.degree. C., containing as the essential and only stabilizers a liquid barium carbonate-barium alkyl phenate and a cadmium salt of a branched chain aliphatic carboxylic acid having from about eight to about ten carbon atoms, optionally as a mixture of at least 85% cadmium salt of a branched chain aliphatic carboxylic acid with up to about 15% of a cadmium salt of an aromatic carboxylic acid having from about seven to about eleven carbon atoms, and/or of a saturated or unsaturated straight chain aliphatic carboxylic acid having from about nine to about twenty-two carbon atoms, the total weight percent of barium and cadmium in the stabilizer system being at least 18%, and the ratio of the weight percent of cadmium to the weight percent of barium being within the range from about 0.4:1 to about 1.2:1.

A process for production of a t-alkyl peroxide compound includes the steps of: a) reacting an n-alkyl t-alkyl ether with a reactant mixture comprising an acid catalyst and a compound of the formula RO2H (I) where R is H or t-alkyl, provided that if R is t-alkyl the t-alkyl peroxide compound product is a di-t-alkyl peroxide, and b) isolating a reaction product comprising said t-alkyl peroxide compound from the mixture resulting from step a). The process can be used to prepare t-butyl hydroperoxide or di-t-butyl peroxide from methyl t-butyl ether. Sulfuric acid may be used as the acid catalyst.
