Abstract: A method and apparatus for use in processing waste materials of various kinds and for reclaiming useable by-product materials from the pyrolized waste materials. The waste materials to be pyrolized are efficiently dehydrated prior to their introduction into the pyrolysis retort using microwaves generated by a large microwave generator. After the waste material is dried, initial ignition is accomplished using a very high intensity laser beam. Laser ignition is continued until sufficient methane and other volatile gases are produced for burning in a burner unit to sustain the pyrolysis reaction.

Abstract: A musical instrument tuning system disposed and displayed upon a string instrument. The tuning system includes a first indicator displayed upon the surface of the string generally having three indicia zones representing a pitch alignment zone, a string tension load warning zone, and a zone indicating that the string is below pitch. The first indicator may take the form of a coating applied to the external surface of the string providing a plurality of visually discernable bands. A second indicator is displayed upon the instrument to provide a visual reference for the string markings. Rotatable displacement of a peg to which the string is fixedly secured provides for linear displacement of the bands with respect to the second indicator. Thus, rotation of the peg resulting in alignment of the tension load warning zone with the second indicator alerts the user that the string may rupture upon the addition of further tension. Opposite rotation of the peg resulting in alignment of the low pitch zone marking on the string with the second indicator demonstrates to the user that the string is tuned below pitch.

Abstract: An apparatus for treating waste material that comprises four major cooperating subsystems, namely a pyrolytic converter (24), a two-stage thermal oxidizer (26), a steam generator (28) and a steam turbine (30) driven by steam generated by the steam generator. In operation, the pyrolytic converter is uniquely heated without any flame impinging on the reactor component and the waste material to be pyrolyzed is transported through the reaction chamber of the pyrolytic converter by a pair of longitudinally extending, side-by-side material transporting mechanisms (42, 43).

Abstract: A system for pyrolysis of hydrocarbon constituents of waste material including a treatment unit featuring a retort with a ellipsoidal cross-section forming a first retort half and a second retort half, the material to be treated being selectively deposited in only one half of the retort at a time during any given period of system operation, to avoid abrasion and wear of the half not in use, thus effectively doubling the life of the retort component. Another feature of a treatment unit according to the invention is a heat reclamation arrangement that introduces gases that have first been combusted to supply heat energy to the retort through a conduit directly into the interior of the retort, to improve the efficiency with which pyrolysis takes place. Further, the treatment unit has an exhaust and cleaning arrangement to render gases produced during pyrolysis substantially free of pollutants such that the gases can be vented to the atmosphere. The exhaust and cleaning arrangement is characterized by a plurality of selectively detachable gas injection tubes, which provide fuel for thermal oxidation of the gases. Each injection tube can be removed for cleaning independently of any other injection tube, and removal can be accomplished without disrupting operation of the system. Still another feature of the treatment unit of the invention is the redundancy and high-temperature resistance of the seal between the retort and other components of the unit.

In operation, the pyrolytic converter is uniquely heated without any flame impinging on the reactor component and the waste material to be pyrolyzed is transported through the reaction chamber of the pyrolytic converter by a pair of longitudinally extending, side-by-side material transfer mechanisms. Each of the transfer mechanisms includes a first screw conveyor section made up of a plurality of helical flights for conveying the heavier waste and a second paddle conveyor section interconnected with the first section for conveying the partially pyrolyzed waste, the second section comprising a plurality of paddle flights. Once operating, the apparatus is substantially self-sustaining and requires a minimum use of outside energy sources for pyrolyzing the waste materials.
