    Abstract: A selective laser sintering apparatus and method is disclosed, in which the laser power is controlled according to the scan velocity. The scanning system, which includes a pair of galvanometer-controlled mirrors for directing the aim of the laser beam, generates signals indicative of either the position or scan velocity of the aim of the beam, in either one or two directions. The signals are gated in the laser power control system so as to pass the signals only during those times at which the laser is to be turned on. A laser power control system receives the signals and, in the case of position signals, differentiates the signals to generate velocity signals. The velocity signals are used to derive a scan velocity, and the scan velocity is multiplied by the desired laser power at full scan velocity to produce a laser power control signal. By making the laser power dependent upon the scan velocity, a constant laser energy flux density is applied to powder at the target surface, even during acceleration and deceleration intervals at the beginning and end of a scan, respectively.

    Abstract: An apparatus comprises a fixture for positioning a first sheet metal part in proximity of a second sheet metal part so that each sheet metal part has one surface facing the other sheet metal part across a gap and one surface facing away from the other sheet metal part, wherein at least one of the sheet metal parts comprises galvanized steel. A laser beam delivery device applies a laser beam to one of the facing away surfaces. A feed wire source provides a feed wire comprising a supplemental wire and a reactive agent at an intersection of the laser beam and the one facing away surface.     Abstract: In order to obtain a weld bead having a good outer appearance with little splash of sputters or the like and a sufficient shearing force, there is provided a flash lamp control section for controlling flash lamps so as to generate two rectangular waves in a pulse wave form at every cycle of a pulse laser beam generated by a pulse YAG laser during the irradiation of the pulse laser beam on coated metal materials. The flash lamp control section is adapted to control a relationship between a peak power and a pulse width of a first rectangular wave and a peak power and a pulse width of a second rectangular wave in predetermined ranges. Under the control of the flash lamp control section, the pulse laser beam generated by the pulse YAG laser is irradiated to the coated metal materials thereby carry out the irradiating operation.

    Abstract: A method for attaching a diamond component to metal is described, wherein a layer of brazing material is provided at the interface between the diamond and the metal. A laser is used for heating the brazing material. The laser beam is focussed through the diamond at least substantially on the interface between the diamond and the metal. In one aspect, the invention is utilized in the manufacture of a travelling wave tube having a metal helix disposed within the tube. Diamond support blocks are bonded between the inner walls of the tube and the windings of the helix according to the method of this invention.
