In this device for controlling the temperature of a battery of cylindrically-shaped electrochemical cells placed side by side, heat is conveyed by the flow of a heat-conveying fluid, which flow takes place inside a double wall whose section is in the form of circular arcs interconnected at their ends so that the junction points between the arcs are substantially in alignment. Relief is disposed in a baffle configuration inside the double wall to constrain the fluid to flow parallel to said section, alternately in one direction and then in the opposite direction. The wall is disposed against the battery in such a manner that each of the circular arcs is disposed coaxially against one of the cells.

A battery assembly which has a number of battery modules (16). For manufacturing, a battery module (16) is built in a battery case (10) having a fixed bulkhead (14) and a middle bulkhead (20) such that the module (16) penetrates the bulkheads (14) (20) via a battery holding opening (18) and a battery passing opening (22). The battery module (16) consists of batteries (12), with the connection parts of the batteries (12) held and supported by the battery holding openings (18) of the fixed bulkhead (14). A cooling/warming medium which flows upward is blocked or the cross sectional area of the cooling/warming medium flow is adjusted by a turning projection (38) so that the batteries (12) are effectively cooled or warmed irrespective of their vertical positions. A separately formed middle bulkhead (20) can facilitate manufacturing and assembling of the assembly. Batteries (12) can be more effectively cooled or warmed by using a smaller number of parts at a smaller number of assembling steps. The battery assembly is adaptable for being mounted on an electric motor vehicle, such as an electric motorcar.

A cylinder-shaped secondary battery includes a container, and a rolled electrode. The container includes a cylinder-shaped inner member, a cylinder-shaped outer member, and a pair of ring-shaped end plates. The electrode is accommodated in the container in an electrically insulating manner, rolled spirally, and has a pair of tabs and a hollow formed therein and extending in an axial direction thereof. Moreover, the electrode includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode and a separator disposed between the positive electrode and negative electrode so as to separate them. The inner member of the container has opposite ends and a hollow formed therein and extending in an axial direction thereof, and is disposed in the axially-extending hollow of the electrode. The outer member of the container has opposite ends, and is disposed on a centrifugal side of the electrode. The end plates of the container close the opposite ends of the inner and outer members, and are pierced through by terminals of the battery in an electrically insulating manner. Moreover, the end plates are bonded to the opposite ends of the inner member and/or the outer member by welding. The thus constructed battery has such good heat-radiating ability and high pressure resistance that it can stably carry out its functions.

A cooling apparatus communicates through a communicating pipe with an inside space of an airtight casing in which a plurality of battery cells are hermetically held. The cooling apparatus and the inside space of the airtight casing are filled with high boiling point coolant. The coolant absorbs heat developed by the plurality of battery cells in the airtight casing so that it evaporates. The evaporated (gaseous) coolant rises toward the cooling apparatus and is condensed in the cooling apparatus. Then the condensed (liquid) coolant returns to around the battery cells by its self-weight. Accordingly, the battery cells are uniformly and efficiently cooled not to have variation in temperature therein.
