A reamer especially well suited for use in minimally invasive hip replacement arthroplasty. The reamer is for preparation of a requisite concave surface in the patient's acetabulum suitable for the acetabular cup member of a hip prosthesis. The reamer comprises a plurality of raised edges, or cutting teeth, for cutting bone and cartilage, and a plurality of openings through which cut fragments of bone and cartilage enter the reamer body. The bone and cartilage fragments are contained within the reamer body and periodically removed so as not to contaminate the surgical site. The reamer according to certain aspects and embodiments of the present invention is easier to insert and withdraw though a minimally invasive incision in the patients body, and, also, effectively restricts bone fragments from escaping into the surgical wound. The improved reamer according to certain aspects and embodiments of the present invention is not limited to use in minimally invasive surgery.

The surgical ribbon file according to the present invention comprises a ribbon-shaped resilient main body with prescribed hardness and flexibility and file teeth on a surface of the main body. The ribbon-shaped main body may be made from alloy with high resiliency, synthetic resin or fiber-reinforced resin. Striking the ribbon-shaped main body from one face to the other face such that notches are formed and triangular portions project from the one face to the other face can form the file teeth, or the file teeth may be hemispherical projections standing on one face of the main body.

An apparatus and method for penetrating bone marrow is provided. The apparatus may include a housing such as a handheld body, a penetrator assembly, a connector that releasably attaches the penetrator assembly to a drill shaft, a gear mechanism, a motor and a power supply and associated circuitry operable to power the motor. The penetrator assembly may include a removable inner trocar and an outer penetrator or needle. It may also include a grooved trocar that allows bone chips to be expelled as the apparatus is inserted into bone marrow. Various connectors are provided to attach the penetrator assembly to the drill shaft.

Modular orthopaedic components are disclosed. One set comprises orthopaedic trials and the other set comprises orthopaedic instruments. Both sets provide several interchangeable elements. Two or more modular components can be quickly and easily assembled and disassembled. Some of the modular components have open female ends with interior grooves that hold a garter-type canted coil spring. Others of the modular components have male ends with exterior grooves. When the two ends are pushed together, the canted coil spring is received in the aligned grooves, temporarily holding the elements together until the surgeon uses force to pull them apart. No special tool is needed to assemble and disassemble these modular components.

Methods and apparatus for forming one or more trans-sacral axial instrumentation/fusion (TASIF) axial bore through vertebral bodies in general alignment with a visualized, anterior or posterior axial instrumentation/fusion line (AAIFL or PAIFL) in a minimally invasive, low trauma, manner and providing a therapy to the spine employing the axial bore. Anterior or posterior starting positions aligned with the AAIFL or PAIFL are accessed through respective anterior and posterior tracts. Curved or relatively straight anterior and curved posterior TASIF axial bores are formed from the anterior and posterior starting positions. The therapies performed through the TASIF axial bores include discoscopy, full and partial discectomy, vertebroplasty, balloon-assisted vertebroplasty, drug delivery, electrical stimulation and various forms of spinal disc cavity augmentation, spinal disc replacement, fusion of spinal motion segments and implantation of radioactive seeds. Axial spinal implants and bone growth materials can be placed into single or multiple parallel or diverging TASIF axial bores to fuse two or more vertebrae, or distract or shock absorb two or more vertebrae.

To this effect, the washing unit (18) is connected to a washing channel (30) formed between the bore and the outer diameter of the flexible shaft (14). The cavity (36) itself is communicated with an inner channel (40) in the flexible shaft (14) through which channel the washing medium (42) is passed into a washing head (42). In the washing head (42), the washing medium flows through the slots (60) in the flexible shaft (14) into an annular groove (58). The annular groove (58) is connected with a channel (54) to which a suction device is connected via a hose (56).
