The container includes a one-piece liner molded from a polymer which is reinforced by a high tensile fiber such as KEVLARnull. A valve is molded into the liner, and a regulator is connected to the valve. A hose, having a conserver positioned therealong, extends between the regulator and a fitting allowing a user to inhale gas from the container. The container is carried in a carrying bag, which can be in the form of a carrying case, a purse, or a back-pack.

An improved flow based incentive spirometer operable through a range of user set flow rates and being adapted to receive a supplemental flow of Oxygen without requiring any change in the calibration of the device or effecting the patient's monitoring of usage. In this manner the spirometer may be utilized by a range of patients having quite distinct therapy needs. The device also features an integral information display receptacle in the base for storage of operational instructions. A portion of the base is transparent to that the information contained in the storage receptacle can be viewed by a patient while the device is in use, thereby permitting a patient to observe such things as the instructions for proper use of the incentive spirometer while using the device.

A variable volume ratio compound counterlung is disclosed for use with a semi-closed circuit breathing apparatus. The compound counterlung generally comprises a flexible bag member disposed within an outer counterlung member. The flexible bag member and the outer counterlung member are in communication with an exhaled gas area of a breathing loop. The flexible bag member having first and second ends which are attached to said outer counterlung. A pair of depth sensors operatively associated with the flexible bag member are provided to vary the volume of said flexible bag member with changes in depth. The flexible bag member is driven by the outer counterlung to discharge gas stored within the flexible bag member depending on the diver's respiratory minute volume. The collapsing of said outer counterlung member also returns gas stored within the outer counterlung back into the breathing loop. The volumetric capacity of the inner counterlung is controlled by one or more ambient pressure sensing devices with an outer bellows-type counterlung that drives the inner counterlung's contents overboard with each breathing cycle. The invention provides semi-closed cycle passive gas addition for recirculating diver breathing systems that is keyed to both respiratory minute volume and depth by making each discharge mass constant relative to the volumetric relationship of the inner and outer counterlungs at the surface, thus making the system far more gas efficient than previous designs.

A regulator assembly is provided for use in a respirator system to supply a regulated flow of air to a respirator head piece. The respirator assembly comprises a housing (15) having an air inlet port (17) for connection to a source of air at comparatively high pressure, and an air outlet port (23) for connection to the respirator head piece. The housing (15) contains an air pressure-reduction stage (19) in communication with the inlet port (17), and a noise-reduction stage (21) between the pressure-reduction stage and the outlet port (23). The noise reduction stage (21) comprises two, spaced, muffler discs (41, 43) the first of which is positioned adjacent the air outlet (39) of the pressure-reduction stage (19). A deflector plate (47) deflects the airflow from the pressure-reduction stage (19) through the first muffler disc (41), and thereby diffuses the air flow before it reaches the second muffler disc (43).

According to the invention, methods and devices for increasing cardiopulmonary circulation induced by chest compression and decompression when performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation are provided. According to one method, a pressure responsive inflow valve is coupled to a patient's airway. Chest compressions and chest decompressions are performed. During chest decompression the inflow valve prevents respiratory gases from entering the lungs until a certain negative intrathoracic pressure level is exceeded at which time the one inflow valve opens. In this way, the inflow valve assists in increasing the magnitude and duration of negative intrathoracic pressure during decompression to enhance the amount of blood flow into the heart and lungs. Further, the patient is supplied with a pressurized respiratory gas through the inflow valve when the inflow valve opens to ventilate the patient.
