Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a low VOC ultra high solids thermosetting coating composition. A polymeric component of the composition includes a low molecular weight polymer polymerized from a monomer mixture containing less than 45 percent by weight of at least one active hydrogen containing monomer. The polymerization takes place in the presence of a reactive diluent. By including the reactive diluent in the polymeric component of the composition, the amount of solvent used in the composition can be substantially reduced, while still providing a pot mix of the composition with a viscosity sufficient to permit efficient coating application. The coatings from the composition are durable; glossy; impact and solvent resistant; and adherent to a wide variety of substrates, such as automobile bumpers, road surfaces and office equipment. The surface of these coatings when subjected to scuffing or surface marring action can be substantially restored to its original condition by simply buffing or polishing the marred or scuffed surface. The invention is also directed to include a combination of chemicals in the thermosetting composition containing an isocyanate cross linking component. Such a combination simultaneously increases the pot life of the pot mix while decreasing the drying time of a coating from the pot mix at ambient temperature over a wide variety of substrate surfaces.
Abstract:
A liquid, hydroxyl functional graft copolymer is prepared by the vinyl addition polymerization, in an inert organic medium, of a vinyl monomer component comprising at least a portion of a carboxyl functional vinyl monomer in the presence of a glycidyl ester containing acrylic polymer, the grafting occuring by the condensation reaction between the carboxyl groups of the vinyl monomer component and the epoxy groups of the glycidyl ester containing acrylic polymer. The graft copolymer is especially useful in formulating clear coating compositions which exhibit excellent sag resistance without the necessity for externally added rheology control agent.
Abstract:
A process for the preparation of insoluble, only slightly swellable, granular polymers of basic vinyl-heterocyclic compounds and of their copolymers with up to 30% by weight of copolymerizable monomers and 0.1-10% by weight of crosslinking agent by exclusion of (atmospheric) oxygen from the mixture of monomer and crosslinking agent, without addition of any initiator or catalyst, and the use of the polymers obtained as ion exchangers, adsorbents and carriers for proteins.

Abstract:
Grafted triglycerides comprising an acrylated triglyceride grafted with a fatty acid residue containing 4 to 28 carbon atoms. Also described are methods for making a grafted triglyceride and for curing a material selected from vinyl esters and unsaturated polyesters and mixtures thereof and optionally a reactive diluent. The method includes the steps of mixing a grafted triglyceride of the present invention with a material selected from vinyl esters, unsaturated polyesters and mixtures thereof to form a mixture, and curing the mixture to form a cured resin system. A cured resin system comprising a cured product obtained by the foregoing method and composites containing the cured product and a filler or reinforcing material are also disclosed. This method also includes use of the grafted triglycerides to make toughened resin and composite systems with reduced hazardous air pollutants without significantly reducing the glass transition temperature and significantly increasing the viscosity.
Abstract:

A blend composition comprising a first thermoplastic polymer, which has functional groups, a reactive block copolymer that has functional groups in two or more blocks, and a second thermoplastic polymer that is compatible with one block of the block copolymer, where the functional groups in the first thermoplastic react with the functional groups in the block copolymer.
