Thermally stable hot applied plastisol compositions are especially useful in the assembly of metal parts. The compositions have adhesive and sealant qualities which allow them to be used in automotive assembly plants. Compositions of the invention comprise as major ingredients finely divided polyvinyl chloride resin, plasticizer, thermoplastic polymeric resin which is solid at room temperature but softens to a flowable state at application temperature, and an adhesion promotion system. Optionally a filler, wax, heat stabilizer, pigment, wetting agent, or mixtures thereof may be added. The individual components work synergistically to get good application properties, metal adhesion, wash-out resistance, and paintability.

The vinyl chloride polymers forming part of the composition of the plastisols result from the polymerization of vinyl chloride in aqueous medium with the aid of sulphosuccinamate(s). After gelling at 120.degree.-140.degree. C., the plastisols based on such polymers have an excellent adhesiveness to metal. They are more particularly suitable for coating sheet metal processed by electrostatic spraying.

A layered structure suitable for use in a pneumatic tire as an innerliner is prepared by directly bonding a fluid permeation prevention film and an adhesive tie layer. Prior to the bonding, the fluid permeation prevention layer is treated to remove any residual plasticizers or oils on the surface of the film. The tie layer comprises 100 weight % of at least one halogenated isobutylene containing elastomer and about 1 to about 20 parts per hundred (phr) of at least one tackifier. The fluid permeation prevention film comprises an elastomeric component dispersed in a vulcanized or partially vulcanized state, as a discontinuous phase, in a matrix of the thermoplastic resin component. The two layers of the layered structure may be separately extruded and then adhered to each other or adhered to each other during a calendaring operation wherein the adhesive tie layer composition is coated onto the treated film.
