A method of making coated engine blocks by (a) casting a metallic engine block having one or more cylinder bores; (b) fabricating a thin walled liner for each bore, the liner being constituted of extruded metallic tubing having a cleansed inner surface, a wall thickness controlled to a thickness of 1-3 mm.+-.15 microns, the outer diameter of the liner being slightly greater than the internal diameter of the cylinder bores; (c) relatively rotating the liner with respect to one or more nozzles for applying a plurality of materials to the internal surface of the liner, the materials comprising first a metal texturing fluid that is applied at high pressures to expose fresh metal of the surface, secondly a bond coating material that is thermally sprayed to form a metallurgical bond with the liner internal surface, and a top coating of anti-friction material that is adheringly plasma sprayed to the bond coating; (d) honing the coated internal surface to remove up to 150 microns of top coating, leaving a finish surface that is concentric to the tube axis within .+-.15 microns; and (e) interference fitting the coated liner to the cylinder bore by freezing the liner while maintaining the block at or above ambient temperature to permit implanting of the liner.

There is disclosed a method of and apparatus for producing a wear-resistant coating on a thin metallic strip, for example for the manufacture of coating scrapers for paper webs. After preparatory surface treatment the strip is passed longitudinally through a coating zone in which coating material in a molten state is sprayed onto the strip by a coating unit as the strip passes. The wear-resistant coating is built up in steps by the application of several coating layers one on top of the other, each being applied during a respective pass of the strip through the coating zone. The strip speed and the capacity of the coating unit are adjusted in relation to each other so that the heat supplied to the carrier material by each coating layer applied will be so slight in relation to the thermal capacity of the carrier material that the temperature increase in the carrier material does not cause any change in the physical properties of the carrier material. After each pass of the strip, the strip is caused or allowed to cool so that the heat applied to the carrier material by the spraying on of each layer of coating is substantially removed therefrom before a new coating layer is applied. In a preferred method the strip is fed from one reel, over a roller to pass the coating unit, to be taken up on another reel and the apparatus is reversed after each pass so that the strip passes back and forth through the coating zone for successive coating steps.

Metallic articles, for instance, ferrous strips are metallized, for instance, zinc coated by passing the heated article through a coating chamber and applying thereto a continuous stream of the molten coating metal so as to uniformly and evenly metallize said article. Thereafter, excess molten coating metal is removed from the coated article by hot gas blasting and the hot gas blasted article leaving the coating chamber is immediately cooled. Wiping means may be provided before applying the molten coating metal so as to deflect any molten coating metal dropping from the metallic article passing therethrough, while rollers may be arranged between the coating metal applying means and the hot gas blasting means. Said rollers serve to remove the major part of excess coating metal from the coated metallic article and to stabilize movement of the metallic article passing through the coating chamber. In contrast to known application of coating metal by atomizing or spraying, no gas is admixed to the continuous stream of the molten coating metal which is, so to say, gently poured onto the surface of the metallic article. Thus coating is effected within a short period of time and a non-porous coating is achieved. Further said short period of time of exposure of the steel article to the liquid zinc enables to eliminate the customary addition of aluminum to the spelter, thus permitting the use of steam for the hot blast instead of the more expensive non-oxidizing gas for that purpose, likewise eliminating the formation of White rust.
