Described herein is a continuous process fear modifying the properties of polyester and polyester based fibers, such as a poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) fiber, comprising subjecting the PBT fiber to alkaline hydrolysis, and optionally further comprising functionalizing the PBT fiber by solution grafting such as fluorination. The alkaline hydrolysis and optionally subsequent functionalization such as fluorination process can be continuous, following the melt blowing/spinning or spun-bonding process. Also described is a nonwoven PBT fiber mat obtained by the surface modification process. Further described is a filtration device comprising the nonwoven PBT fiber mat.

Antistatic agents and their use in processing textiles or formed plastic substrates. The antistatic agent comprises a compound having a fluorocarbon moiety and an ethoxylated quaternary ammonium moiety. The antistatic composition increases the electrolytic conductivity of treated textile or plastic materials, thereby increasing the rate of electrostatic charge dissipation thereof. The antistatic agents remain effective after exposure of the treated substrate to an aqueous environment.

A process for improving the dyeability of fabrics or fibers comprising polyhydroxylzed polymers by the use of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of a compound of the formula; ##STR1## and mixtures thereof, wherein R, R', R" and R"' are lower alkyl radicals having 1 to 20 carbon atoms and X is selected from the group consisting of sulfate, sulfonate and halide. The process requires that a dry cauticized fabric be treated with a dilute solution of a lower alkyl ammonium salt so that the fabric contains less than about 50% by weight of water prior to curing.
