    摘要: A highly efficient and modular communication network includes a small number of different exchange units including a network controller exchange unit, line master exchange units, line exchange units and terminal exchange units. For high volume, low cost manufacture and ease of maintenance, the exchange units are in turn comprised of a few standard modules such as a microprocessor unit, a RAM unit, a PROM unit and 2 port adapter units. A combination of high communication efficiency and rapid response is attained using small, address carrying data blocks which are threaded through one or more addressable micronodes along a communications channel. A predetermined communication discipline using fixed length blocks and a single start bit per block minimizes data block overhead to maintain a high communication efficiency notwithstanding the small data block size.

    摘要: A starloop communication network for intraestablishment communication in a multiterminal processing system includes a digital switch as its central terminal. In the basic mode, the switch is configured so that the input from each terminal is switched back to the next terminal forming a loop network. A central processor in the network need only service the output of the first terminal on the loop and the input from the last terminal. The digital switch includes a port connected to monitor activity on the loop. In the event of a failure, the monitor can determine the failing terminal in the loop by use of a binary search around the loop. The failing terminal will be detected by the monitor and automatically isolated from the loop by the digital switch. The communication network may also be configured to include a plurality of terminal devices of equal performance and intelligence, i.e. a plurality of central processors.

    摘要: The process for determining the best communication route from a source end station to a destination end station is distributed over both source and destination network nodes. Network nodes, at the interface between a wide area network (WAN) and each subnetwork, contain access agents to control the communication flow between the wide area network and an end station in the subnetwork. The task of selecting the best route between two end stations is distributed between the access agents at the WAN interface in the first subnetwork, and the access agents at the WAN interface in the second subnetwork. Each access agent at one WAN interface obtains the best route from itself to the end station in its subnetwork. Each access agent at the other WAN interface finds the best route from each access agent at the first WAN interface through itself to the end station in its subnetwork. One designated access agent collects all the best route information. This best route information is concatenated, and the route with the least weight is selected as the best route between end stations.

Short delay limits can be met by creating composite packets at the nodes; these carry information for more than one call. Composite packets are transmitted to the PAD, disassembled and reassembled into composite packets each addressed to a single destination node. A call is allocated one or more octets at a given location in packets having a given connection number. Octets are handled by the PAD according to the connection number of their packet and their location in the packet.

The inventive telecommunications interface is capable of collecting multiple asynchronous video, audio, graphic and data signals from a variety of different kinds of sources and retransmitting such signals in a suitable form for display or detection with one or more types of receiver equipment at one or more locations. The interface operates at rates ranging from several hundred bits per second to several gigabits per second.The telecommunications interface includes a dual port RAM whose input and output operate asynchronously. Signals from the user sources are stripped of timing and source identification information and are written into the dual port RAM, while output processors read previously stored user signals out from the dual port RAM. The output processor appropriately format the retrieved signals, which are then transmitted to the receiver equipment.

    摘要: A packet-switched facsimile communication system operable in a store-and-forward mode is provided for enabling substantially simultaneous full-duplex communication between a plurality of telecommunications terminals, such as facsimile transceivers, over a communications network with a plurality of other facsimile transceivers having access to the communications network and with which such communication is desired. The disclosed packetizing of data and transmission thereof in a store-and-forward mode with dynamic routing provides a highly efficient utilization of the transmission facilities, substantially error-free data transmission and a handshake capability between a wide variety of dissimilar and otherwise incompatible facsimile machines having differing protocols, modulation techniques and other speed and code characteristics. Large blocks of data and other message information from facsimile data terminals are subdivided into data packets prior to transmission, converted into a systemwide compatible protocol, compressed, transmitted independently and time multiplexed with other packetized data from other terminals on the communications network, stored and forwarded on a priority basis and in accordance with network availability at one or more switching nodes in the network, reassembled from the received packets at a destination processor into the original data messages for coupling to the message destination terminals such that the received message is decompressed and reconverted into a format compatible with the destination terminal characteristics to enable information interchange therebetween.
