The compounds may have a formula AAl12−x−yMaxMbyO19 where A is typically an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, a rare earth metal, Pb, Bi or any combination thereof, and Ma is Ni, Fe, Cu, Cr, V, Mn, or Co or any combination thereof, and Mb is Ti, Sn, Ge, Si, Zr, Hf, Ga, In, Zn, Mg, Nb, Ta, Sb, Mo, W or Te or any combination thereof. Compounds with varying colors, such as blue, can be made by varying A, Ma and Mb and their relative amounts. Compositions comprising the compounds and methods for making and using the same are also disclosed.

Provided are an essentially lead-free black ceramic composition for a filter, a filter formed using the same, and a flat display device including the filter. The lead-free black ceramic composition may include at least one compound selected from the group consisting of B2O3, BaO, and ZnO; and at least one black pigment selected from the group consisting of TiO, CuO, NiO, MnO2, Cr2O3 and Fe2O3. Alternatively, the lead-free black ceramic composition may include Bi2O3; at least one compound selected from the group consisting of B2O3, SiO2, P2O5, Na2O3, Al2O3, BaO, ZnO and TiO2; and at least one black pigment selected from the group consisting of TiO, CuO, NiO, MnO2, Cr2O3 and Fe2O3. The lead-free black ceramic composition for a filter essentially does not contain PbO, which harms human beings and the environment. As a result, the use of the composition is not affected by regulations preventing the use of Pb. In addition, the composition can be calcined at a relatively low temperature and consume a small amount of energy.

The invention relates to pigments consisting of substantially spherical particles with a mean particle diameter of less than 10 .mu.m, on the basis of an oxidic or silicate substrate material with noble metal distributed extremely finely on and/or in the particles. Preferred pigments are purple-colored and are based on an oxide from the series SiO.sub.2, SnO.sub.2 and ZrO.sub.2 and gold as noble metal. The pigments are suitable for the production of ceramic decorations and for the dyeing of plastics, synthetic films and fibers as well as lacquers. Exceptional application properties are obtained by virtue of the spherical shape. The pigments are obtainable by a spray-pyrolysis process in which an aerosol consisting of a solution of at least one noble metal compound and an oxide- or silicate-forming precursor is subjected to pyrolysis; the pigment is separated from the pyrolysis gas.
