Non-ionic water-soluble cellulose ethers modified with 3-azido-2-hydroxypropyl groups bound via an ether link are provided having a molar degree of substitution MSAHP in the range from 0.001 to 0.50. Exemplary cellulose ethers are alkyl cell doses, including methyl, hydroxyalkyl (e.g. hydroxyethyl hydroxypropyl) or alkylhydroxyalkyl cellulose (e.g. methylhydroxyethyl). Reaction products with alkyne compounds are also provided, resulting in a terminal alkyne group. The reaction of azide with the alkyne proceeds as a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction, advantageously with Cu(I) or ruthenium catalysts. A multiplicity of cellulose ethers can be obtained from the conversion reaction. Variations in the macroscopic properties can be achieved by controlled modification, ranging from increased or reduced viscosity. The reaction, taking place within a few seconds, requires only minimal catalyst. Gel formation is reversible by adjustment of the pH such that a monophasic system (high-viscous fluid) arises again from a biphasic system (gel+low-viscous water phase).

Betain group-containing derivatives of carboxymethylcellulose are disclosed. They are characterized in that all or a portion of the carboxymethyl groups are or is replaced by groups of the general formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or methyl group,R.sup.2 is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group with 2 to 5 carbon atoms,R.sup.3, R.sup.4 is an alkyl group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms,R.sup.5 is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group with 1 to 10 carbon atoms,with the proviso that, on the average, at least 0.1 betaine groups are contained for each anhydroglucose unit of the polymeric molecule.Also, a method for the synthesis of these compounds and their use in cosmetic preparations, especially for the care of hair, are disclosed. In addition, novel derivatives of carboxymethylcellulose with tertiary amino groups are taught as intermediates. In these derivatives, all or a portion of these groups are or is replaced by groups of the general formula ##STR2## in which the substituents R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 have the above meaning, with the proviso that, on the average, at least 0.1 tertiary amino groups are contained per anhydroglucose unit of the polymeric molecule.

Polysaccharide aldehydes having the formula Sacch--O--CH.sub.2 --CH.dbd.CH--CHO, ##STR1## such as starch, cellulose, and gum aldehydes, are useful for imparting wet, dry, or temporary wet strength to paper. They are prepared by a non-oxidative method which involves reacting the polysaccharide base, in the presence of alkali, with a derivatizing acetal reagent having the general structure ##STR2## and then hydrolyzing the acetal by adjusting the pH to less than 7, preferably 2-4. In the formulas, n is 1-3; R.sup.11 and R.sup.12 are independently an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, or alkaryl group when n is 1, R.sup.11 or R.sup.12 is one of the groups when n is 2, or R.sup.11 and R.sup.12 are not present when n is 3; R.sup.13 is an alkyl group, optionally containing an ether linkage, or an aralkyl group; R.sup.14 and R.sup.15 are individually a hydrogen or a methyl group; R.sup.16, R.sup.17, and R.sup.18 are individually an alkyl group; Y- is an anion; Z is an organic group capable of reacting with the polysaccharide base to form an ether derivative and selected from the group consisting of an epoxide, ethylenically unsaturated group, halohydrin, and halogen; R.sup.19, if present, is a divalent organic group containing no reactive substituents; and A and A'0 are lower alkyls or together form at least a 5-membered cyclic acetal.

The invention relates to a solid insoluble carrier which is activated for bonding of nucleophilic groups and to a method of its preparation. The carrier contains active groups --O.CO.O.R, where R is the residue selected from the group comprising nitrophenyl, dinitrophenyl, trichlorophenyl, pentachlorophenyl, N-succinimidyl, N-phthalimidyl, and 8-quinolinyl. Active groups are bonded to polysaccharides, phenol-formaldehyde resins, polyacrylates, or polyacrylamides. The invention further relates to a method for preparation of the polymeric carrier, which consists in treatment of polymers carrying hydroxyl functions and selected from the group comprising polysaccharides, phenol-formaldehyde resins, polyacrylates, and polyacrylamides, with esters of chloroformic acid which contain the above mentioned active groups.

The invention relates to organic polymers which can be crosslinked under the action of light and which are suitable for carrying out photomechanical processes. These polymers are photochemically considerably more sensitive than known comparable polymers and their sensitivity can additionally also be further increased by means of a combination with sensitizers.
