The invention provides a process for producing a hydrocarbon, which process comprises contacting an organic compound comprising at least one heteroatom with hydrogen in the presence of a solid catalyst, which catalyst comprises: (a) a first metal, which is a transition metal suitable for catalysing the hydrogenation of organic compounds; (b) a phosphide of one or more transition metals; and (c) a solid catalyst support. Further provided is a composition, and a catalyst. Both the composition and the catalyst comprise (a) a first metal, which is a transition metal suitable for catalysing the hydrogenation of organic compounds; (b) a phosphide of one or more transition metals; and (c) a solid catalyst support. The catalyst is typically a hydrogenolysis catalyst. It may for instance be employed as a hydrodeoxygenation (HDO), hydrodesulfurization (HDS) or hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) catalyst, and is usually employed as an HDO catalyst.

Hydrocracking processes for the selective production of middle distillates are disclosed. The hydrocracking catalyst contains a low acidity, highly dealuminated USY zeolite having a zeolite acid density of from 1 to 100 micromole/g, a catalyst support, and one or more metals. The hydrocracking process can maximize middle distillate yield while providing for effective impurity removal and enhanced aromatics saturation.

Provided are the preparation of a metal lattice-doping catalyst in an amorphous molten state, and the process of catalyzing methane to prepare olefins, aromatics, and hydrogen using the catalyst under oxygen-free, continuous flowing conditions. Such a process has little coke deposition and realizes atom-economic conversion. Under the conditions encountered in a fixed bed reactor (i.e. reaction temperature: 750-1200 °C; reaction pressure: atmospheric pressure; the weight hourly space velocity of feed gas: 1000-30000 ml/g/h; and fixed bed), the conversion of methane is 8-50%. The selectivity of olefins is 30-90%. And the selectivity of aromatics is 10-70%.

A method of obtaining a thermal cracking feedstock for the production of olefins from an in-situ extracted oil-shale formation. The method comprises the steps of obtaining compositional analyses data for a set of in-situ extracted shale oils, the set of in-situ extracted shale oils produced at varied production temperatures and/or levels of lithostatic stress; determining from the compositional analyses data a value of a production temperature or a lithostatic stress that when achieved produces an in-situ extracted shale oil having a concentration of aromatics at or below a target level, the target level suitable for the production of olefins by thermal cracking; adjusting oil-shale formation extraction conditions to achieve the values for production temperature and/or lithostatic stress; and producing an in-situ extracted shale oil suitable for use as a thermal cracking feedstock for the production of olefins. A method for processing a hydrocarbon produced from a feed oil-shale formation to produce olefins is also provided.
