A system and method for the direct injection of a gaseous fuel into an internal combustion engine. The gaseous fuel injection system (10) delivers metered amounts of gaseous fuel directly into the combustion chamber of an engine. The injection system (10) is configured as a 'two-stage' system, comprising a gaseous fuel metering means (12) and a delivery injector (14). The metering means (12) is arranged coaxially with the delivery injector (14) such that gaseous fuel metered thereby can be received by the delivery injector (14) for subsequent delivery to the engine. A holding chamber (16) is arranged intermediate of the metering means (12) and delivery injector (14). Operation of the engine (30) and the injection system (10) is controlled by an engine control means comprising a suitably programmed electronic control unit. The injection system (10) is configured to promote operation of the metering means (12) with a sonic flow during the gaseous fuel metering event. For this purpose, a region downstream of the metering means (12) and within the injection system (10) is configured and sized to promote operation of the metering means (12) with a sonic flow during the gaseous fuel metering event. Specifically, the metering means (12) and the delivery injector (14) are arranged and/or configured to ensure sonic flow through the metering means (12) when it is opened and is metering gaseous fuel. The delivery injector (14) may also be arranged and/or configured so as to promote sonic flow throughout a gaseous fuel delivery event. Typically, the holding chamber (16) is configured to be of a sufficient volume to ensure sonic flow throughout the metering event.

A method of operating a gaseous-fueled internal combustion engine comprises selecting one of at least two predetermined operating modes as a function of engine load and engine speed. A first operating mode is selected when said engine is commanded to operate within a first region corresponding to a low load and low speed range, and a second operating mode is selected when said engine is commanded to operate within a second region distinct from said first region and corresponding to at least one of a greater load and a greater speed range compared to said first region. In the first operating mode, the gaseous fuel is introduced in a single injection event with the injection valve commanded to open with a constant amplitude Al. In the second operating mode, the gaseous fuel is introduced in a single injection event and the injection valve is commanded to begin with a constant amplitude A2 for a predetermined time and then to open to an amplitude A3, wherein amplitude A3 is greater than amplitude A2.

Cette cartouche (40) peut ensuite être remise dans le circuit après-vente après nettoyage et reconditionnement. The liquid gas motor has an injection device (1) which injects liquid gas through an injection nozzle (2). According to the invention, the injection nozzle (2) opens into the combustion chamber (4), and so the liquid gas is directly injected into the combustion chamber. The direct injection of the liquid gas creates ideal combustion conditions, in particular since the liquid gas which evaporates in the combustion chamber (4) has a cooling effect which is particularly advantageous under a high load. The disclosed liquid gas engine is preferably provided with an injection device (1) designed as an alternating piston pump which works based on the principle of accumulation of energy.
